Volvo is updating the plug-in hybrid versions of its XC60 and XC90, with the new models more than doubling the electric-only driving range of the existing versions.
The new long-range XC60 plug-in hybrid gets an estimated electric driving range of up to 126 kilometres while the large XC90 long-range plug-in hybrid model gets up to 117 kilometres of range.
Both are going into production this fall for select markets. Canadian market details weren’t provided so expect the two SUVs to launch here for either the 2027 or 2028 model years.
The current 2027 XC60 PHEV gets up to 56 kilometres of range while the 2026 XC90 PHEV gets up to 53 kilometres.

How do they get more range?
Volvo is fitting both versions with a new, larger-capacity, floor-integrated battery as well as a more powerful electric motor.
This should allow owners, who remember to plug in their vehicles to charge, to use their SUVs for far longer distances before the gasoline-burning engine ever has to kick in.
Both the XC60 and XC90 are also available with mild hybrid powertrain choices.

More about the XC60
Besides the updated powertrain, the midsize XC60 is getting a design update.
The SUV is getting a new grille and redesigned front bumper, hood, front wings and rides on new wheels.
The front end also includes what Volvo refers to as Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights.

At the rear end, the XC60 gets a newly designed tailgate, LED lamps and an updated bumper.
On the interior, there’s a new dashboard and door panel design, along with wood decor and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather upholstery.

On the tech side, the XC60 gets the company’s latest active safety technology, which lets the vehicle intervene if it detects an imminent collision.
It also gets Google Gemini, Google’s AI-powered virtual assistant, which is capable of natural interactions with the occupants and help manage vehicle functions, plan stops along a route and more.

More about the XC90
The XC90, Volvo’s seven-seat SUV, has already undergone recent design updates.
The updated model is picking up the Google Gemini virtual assistant.

Over-the-air updates keep things fresh
Both SUVs can receive regular over-the-air updates that keep both vehicles up to date.
“The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president & CEO at Volvo Cars, in a news release. “Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment. This means a path to full electrification for every customer.”
