Volvo is updating the XC40, the company’s smallest fuel-burning SUV that is sold in Canada.

The XC40 has a mild-hybrid powertrain.

The next-generation XC40 is expected to go into production in early 2027, so expect it to launch in Canada for the 2028 model year.

Updated design

The overall exterior design of the compact SUV doesn’t change a whole lot, but there are subtle differences.

The new vehicle gets what Volvo calls Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, along with an updated grille and front bumper, hood and front wings for a more contemporary look.

At the rear, the XC40 gets new LED taillights, updated tailgate and redesigned bumper.

The small SUV rides on new 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels with a diamond-cut design.

Modern tech greets you on the inside

Volvo updated the interior to give the XC40 a larger and crisper screen, now measuring 11.2 inches and offering the company’s latest user experience.

Volvo said interacting with the screen is faster and easier, requiring fewer taps to access key functions.

The vehicle also has Google Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, which allows occupants to have natural conversations with the system. The virtual assistant can help plan journeys or find stops along the way and other functions too.

Updated interior

The ethos of Scandinavian minimalism is retained on the inside.

The updated cabin gets what Volvo calls smart storage space and various integrated features, such as an updated wireless phone charger.

New premium upholstery and decor options are available to meet customer needs. This includes, for the first time on the XC40, an optional Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery paired with Brown Ash wood decor elements across the interior.

Other options include Black Ash or aluminum decor.

Cabin illumination has been further refined in the updated XC40.

Safety improvements

Volvo, a brand with a reputation for advancing vehicle safety, outfitted the XC40 with new safety technologies, including warnings for the drivers in case of imminent crash and even stepping in to prevent the collision.

The vehicle can steer around danger with automatic emergency steering or brake with automatic emergency braking.

Volvo said the XC40 has advanced a new software and sensor platform that includes new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras.

Other new and available features include:

  • Door Opening Alert – this helps protect cyclists and other road users by warning occupants before opening the door into passing traffic.
  • Expanded Pilot Assist – this optional feature is expanded with lane change assist and refined to follow the road more smoothly, providing added support and comfort on longer journeys.
  • Upgraded 360 camera – this feature is upgraded to a 3D view that makes parking and low-speed manoeuvres easier.
