Volkswagen has unveiled its first electric GTI model and this one is not coming to Canada.

The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI is a small, electric hot hatch that will be sold in Europe.

For those who aren’t familiar with the Polo name, it is a mainstay model within Volkswagen’s lineup, smaller than the Golf.

The new ID. Polo GTI gets an all-electric powertrain with 222 hp (166 kW) and 214 lb.-ft. (290 Nm) of torque.

Volkswagen said that’s enough to propel the small car from zero to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.

The top speed is 175 km/h.

The car also manages an estimated driving range of up to 424 kilometres on the WLTP test cycle, which is more optimistic than our EPA/NRCan standards.

The hot hatch rides on 19-inch wheels.

The driver has access to different driving profiles, and the push of one button will activate all drive and chassis systems to maximum sportiness. This also alters the colours and graphics on the display screens inside the cockpit.

The car has a starting price of just less than 39,000 euros in Germany.
