An Audi car has set a Guinness World Record for longest distance travelled by an electric vehicle on a single charge.

The record was set by Polish rally driver Mikołaj Marczyk who drove an Audi A6 Sportback e-tron performance a record distance of 1,338 kilometres on a single battery charge through Poland.

He began driving the car on Sept. 11 just before 2 a.m. and drove it along the Vistula – known as Wisła to Polish folks like this writer – the country’s longest river.

Marczyk drove through major cities such as Krakow, Sandomierz, Warsaw, Toruń and Grudziądz, before he reached Hel, a resort city on the Baltic Sea, and then returned back along the same route.

His record drive ended between Toruń and Ciechocinek.

The entire journey took more than 45 hours and occurred in regular traffic.

Audi said the car’s final consumption figure was 7.09 kWh per 100 kilometres.

The Audi A6 Sportback e-tron performance has a battery with a net capacity of 94.9 kWh and its powertrain delivers 367 hp.

How did Marczyk manage 1,338 kilometres?

Based on the Euro-observed WLTP test cycle, the car has an estimated range of up to 777 kilometres.

The car is also the most aerodynamic Audi of all time, with a drag coefficient of 0.21 Cd.

Audi said Marczyk was able to far exceed the car’s estimated range by driving with a consistent focus on efficiency.

“Its battery has a net capacity of 94.9 kWh, complemented by an exceptionally low drag coefficient. There is enormous potential in that. Even for me, a result of 1,338 kilometers was a pleasant surprise,” Marczyk said in a news release.

Marczyk offers tips to drivers of electric vehicles to help them maximize their own efficiency.

This includes:

• Get to know your car – its characteristics, driving modes, systems, and behavior under different conditions.
• Make the best possible use of regenerative braking – recovering energy during deceleration is one of the keys to efficient electric driving.
• Check tire pressure – the correct pressure reduces rolling resistance and helps lower energy consumption.
• Read the road and drive smoothly – anticipate what lies ahead and avoid unnecessary acceleration and abrupt braking.

A6 e-tron available in Canada
