After much teasing, previewing and showcasing of capabilities to whet our appetites, Mercedes-Benz finally revealed its new high-performance electric car.
The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which utilizes electric and visual elements from the Concept AMG GT XX, has been unveiled.
While the name might suggest the car is either a coupe or a sedan, it is neither.
It utilizes a liftback-style rear trunk door, therefore making this electric bullet on wheels a humble four-door hatchback, albeit with a six-figure price tag. The question that remains is just what number will sit at the front of the six figures.

Powertrain
The folks at AMG are not pulling any punches with the EV, which utilizes an 800-volt Formula 1-derived architecture.
The car’s battery uses directly cooled cylindrical cells for consistent, sustained and long-duration delivery of high power.
The car is launching with two powertrain varieties. There’s the GT 55 with a maximum drive output of 805 hp (503-hp continuous output) and 1,328 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as the GT 63, which has a maximum output of 1,153 hp (711-hp continuous output) and 1,475 lb.-ft. of torque.
Both versions use a powertrain with three axial-flux motors, one for the front axle and one for each rear wheel, providing fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive.
As previewed in the Concept AMG GT XX, the car’s electric architecture is capable of outputs of more than 1,340 hp, Mercedes-Benz said. Perhaps when Mercedes is ready to unleash an even higher high-performance variety, we’ll see future models with even more power. Keep in mind, the GT 55 and GT 63 are already capable of serious performance.

Performance specs
The automaker provided a few performance numbers for the two models.
GT 55
The GT 55’s performance figures include:
- Zero to 100 km/h: 2.8 seconds
- Zero to 200 km/h: 9.0 seconds
- Zero to 100 km/h with one-foot rollout: 2.5 seconds
- Zero to 200 km/h with one-foot rollout: 8.7 seconds
- Boost duration: 55 seconds
- Top speed: 300 km/h with Driver’s Package
- Curb weight: 2,460 kilograms
- Drag coefficient: 0.22 Cd
GT 63
The GT 63’s performance figures include:
- Zero to 100 km/h: 2.4 seconds
- Zero to 200 km/h: 6.8 seconds
- Zero to 100 km/h with one-foot rollout: 2.1 seconds
- Zero to 200 km/h with one-foot rollout: 6.4 seconds
- Boost duration: 63 seconds
- Top speed: 300 km/h with Driver’s Package
- Curb weight: 2,460 kilograms
- Drag coefficient: 0.22 Cd

Charging capacity
Mercedes-Benz points out the GT 4-Door Coupe is capable of DC fast-chargng speeds of up to 600 kW. That’s about double the speed of any public Level 3 charging station available in Canada, but it makes the car ready for higher speeds when they become available.
At a rate of 600 kW, the car could add about 460 kilometres of range in 11 minutes of charging.
The on-board AC charging adapter, for Level 2 charging, is capable of speeds up to 11 kW.

V8 feel and sound
The car can simulate that AMG V8 experience for drivers who want it.
The AMGFORCE S+ mode produces a simulated AMG V8 sound and simulates gear changes with traction interruption.

Continuous power output
Mercedes-Benz already previewed the capabilities of the platform to deliver continuous high power outputs when the Concept AMG GT XX was driven around a high-speed test track in Nardò, Italy, completing 40,075 kilometres in seven days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and seven seconds, essentially going the distance of circling the world.
The automaker said the car uses innovative batteries that were specifically developed for sustained maximum performance.
The innovative cylindrical cells – 2,660 in all – receive direct cooling for improved heat dissipation, allowing the car to run at high speeds for long periods.
Innovations of the battery pack also allow it to charge at high speeds.

Agility, stability and comfort
The AMG GT 4-Door Coupe uses many of Mercedes’ innovations for improved driving dynamics and comfort.
The car has an AMG Active Ride Control air suspension, active rear-axle steering, multi-link front and rear axles and more.
The automaker enhanced the car’s aero balance with active aerodynamic elements, including a new rear diffuser, a rear spoiler and an air management system.

Canadian price not announced
Production starts in Sindelfingen, Germany this summer.
Canadian pricing and an availability date haven’t been provided.
