The Mercedes-Benz EQS, which launched in late 2021, has been updated for the 2027 model year, offering more features and range.
The luxury electric saloon is not entering a new generation but is getting a significant update, with more than a quarter of its components updated, refined or newly developed, Mercedes-Benz said.
The EQS is the company’s large electric sedan, the S-Class of EVs if you will.
The company said the updates give the car more technology, refinement and range.
The car is also becoming “smarter” and picks up a steer-by-wire option, making Mercedes-Benz the first German automaker to offer this type of steering system. (More on what that is further down.)

Four versions to choose from
The luxury sedan is available in four power varieties, though they may not all become available in Canada.
The four include the EQS 400, EQS 450+, EQS 500 4MATIC and EQS 580 4MATIC.
The EQS 450+ is the range king, offering an estimated driving range of 926 kilometres, an increase of 13 per cent over its predecessor.
That range estimate is based on the optimistic WLTP testing standards observed in Europe. When the range estimates are reported in Canada and the United States, we can expect them to be a bit lower.
The EQS 400 has a 112-kWh battery while the others have a 122-kWh battery. The EQS 400 is new, offering a lower entry point for the large sedan.

More range
The EQS rides on an 800-volt architecture and the updated car gets new drive units and a two-speed gearbox on the main drive at the rear axle and larger batteries with optimized cell chemistry, Mercedes-Benz said.
Estimated ranges and power outputs of each, based on WLTP test standards, are as follows:
- EQS 400 – 362 hp, 372 lb.-ft., and 817-km range
- EQS 450+ – 402 hp, 372 lb.-ft., and 926 km
- EQS 500 4MATIC – 469 hp, 553 lb.-ft., and 876 km
- EQS 580 4MATIC – 577 hp, 590 lb.-ft., and 876 km
The car gets its gobs of range thanks to more efficient drivetrains, higher capacity batteries and a low drag coefficient of 0.20 Cd, which makes it one of the most aerodynamic cars ever.
Smarter car
The car is becoming smarter. It picks up the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which has over-the-air updates and a new generation of the company’s MBUX infotainment system, which incorporates artificial intelligence.
An MBUX virtual assistant can take part in complex conversations, with various avatars available for a personalized touch.
The MBUX Hyperscreen, standard across the model range, measures 55 inches.
The EQS is also equipped with 10 external cameras, up to five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors, which work with the MB.OS, which utilizes AI to understand the surrounding traffic conditions.
This enables various driver assist technologies, including MB.Drive Assist, MB. Drive Parking Assist and more.

Steer-by-wire system
The car has optional steer-by-wire technology, which removes the physical, mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels.
The automaker said this lowers the effort required to steer, such as when navigating parking areas. It also lessens vibrations caused by bumpy roads, while maintaining a precise and intuitive steering feel.
EQS cars with the steer-by-wire system also get a new flatter steering wheel.
Comfort
Mercedes-Benz said it improved the car’s ride comfort.
The Airmatic air suspension gets intelligent damper control for improved comfort over bumps.
The damping uses Car-to-X information, picking up road data from Mercedes-Benz vehicles in front to understand what bumps are on the way.

Rear-seat luxury
The posh rear cabin has plenty of goods.
The EQS has power adjustable heated rear seats, along with wireless charging pads and an available in-car entertainment package for the rear.
The MBUX rear seat entertainment system features two 13.1-inch screens with new, individually configurable MBUX remote controls.
The screens can also be used for video calls through Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Webex thanks to integrated HD cameras.
The EQS can also be had with a premium Burmester 3D surround sound system with 15 speakers and Dolby Atmos.
Canadian availability
Canadian market data such as pricing wasn’t provided. We can expect the 2027 EQS to arrive sometime in the second half of 2026.
