Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung limited to only 30 cars worldwide

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung gets 637 hp from its biturbo V8 engine with all that power sent to the rear wheels.

The good folks in Affalterbach, Germany have created Mercedes-AMG’s second-ever Mythos Series car and it looks absolutely wild and ready for the track.

But few will ever get to drive it as the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is limited to just 30 cars worldwide.

That’s a fraction of the company’s earlier Mythos effort as the first car from the series, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, saw 250 units produced.

Powertrain

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is hand-built and based on the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 platform.

It is powered by a 4-litre biturbo flat-plane-crank V8 engine that produces 646 Euro horses (or PS), hence the vehicle name, which translates to 637 of our North American horses.

All that power 637 hp and 627 lb.-ft. of torque are sent to the rear wheels only via an AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission.

Mercedes-AMG stripped the CLE 53’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, which reduces the car’s weight and alters its driving dynamics.

The car is fitted with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential to optimize torque distribution between the rear wheels through a variable locking action that is based on the driving situation. Mercedes said this helps enhance traction, stability and overall dynamics.

Enhanced dynamics

Through various means, engineers were able to reduce the car’s weight by about 375 pounds.

Despite the tremendous weight loss, engineers managed to increase the Spezialanfertigung’s rigidity.

The company said the body structure can withstand the highest loads and added reinforcements and an integrated roll bar significantly increase the car’s bodyshell rigidity.

The body of the car has also been engineered for maximum driving dynamics and performance.

The car is 2.4 inches wider at the front and rear and rides on a wider track, which helps increase stability and cornering capability. The car also rides on wide wheels and tires. The AMG Performance forged 20-inch wheels are 11 inches wide up front and 12 inches wide at the rear. The car rides on 305/30 ZR 20 front tires and 335/30 ZR 20 tires at the rear. That makes the tires more than a foot wide front and back. Mercedes said the tires use technology that was originally created for the Mercedes-AMG One and the rubber designs found on this car are exclusive to the CLE 464 Spezialanfertigung.

Ride height was also lowered by 0.9 inches at the front axle and 0.6 inches at the rear.

Track-read aero

The pictures of the car leave no doubt that the car has aerodynamics ready for the track.

But the car is road legal, so Mercedes-AMG fitted the car with a front diffuser that can be manually adjusted between Street and Race positions, thanks to three fasteners.

When set in Race position, the car is said to be exceptionally precise and stable at high speeds, the automaker said.

At top speed, the car generates 550 pounds of downforce.

The AMG Traction Control system allows the driver to adjust the level of support they receive. The system also allows the electronic stability program to be turned off (for track use only).

Interior uses lightweight materials

Mercedes-AMG engineers focused on maintaining the car’s lightweight construction throughout the car, including its interior construction.

The car loses its rear seats and acoustic insulation materials. Comfort features have been reduced. Even the car’s audio system has been simplified to save weight.

The car is fitted with ultra-lightweight high-end racing bucket seats that are described as offering pronounced lateral support.

Door panels are fitted with carbon fibre.

The interior has a roll bar, which helps improve torsional rigidity and an available Performance Package fits the seats with six-point harnesses.

Performance figures

Mercedes provided a few performance figures for the car.

Performance specs include:

  • Zero to 100 km/h – 3.9 seconds
  • Zero to 200 km/h – 11.4 seconds
  • Zero to 300 km/h – 36.8 seconds Track/36.2 seconds Street
  • Top speed – 310 km/h

The automaker hasn’t provided pricing, but even if you could afford to buy the car, you can’t because it’s already sold out. Mercedes said the car sold out even before it was publicly unveiled.
