Mercedes has revealed the long-promised first-ever in-house-developed Mercedes-AMG full-size SUV, the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV.
The high-performance all-electric SUV is launching for the 2028 model year.
It’s expected to arrive in North America in the summer of 2027, though exact Canadian timing hasn’t been announced. Pricing has also not been announced.
At launch, the SUV will be available in three powertrain grades, the entry-level GT 53, mid-grade GT 55 and top-dog GT 63.

Power outputs of each
The power outputs of each of the three versions are as follows:
- Mercedes-AMG GT 53 – peak 536 hp; sustained 362 hp and 590 lb.-ft. of torque
- Mercedes-AMG GT 55 – peak 805 hp, sustained 711 hp and 1,372 lb.-ft. of torque
- Mercedes-AMG GT 63 – peak 1,153 hp; sustained, 711 hp and 1,475 lb.-ft. of torque
The GT 53 powertrain features two permanently excited synchronous motors while the GT 55 and GT 63 have three axial flux motors. All three have AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive.

SUV rides on AMG.EA platform
If the looks and power specs of the SUV look familiar, that’s because it shares its AMG.EA high-performance architecture with the also-recently-unveiled Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.
Unlike the GT Coupe, which is a four-door car, this latest model is lifted to be a full-on SUV.
The SUV runs on an 800-volt architecture that Mercedes said was developed to provide consistent, readily available power.

Battery capacity and charging speed
The entry-level GT 53 gets a battery capacity of 106 kW with the ability to DC fast-charge at rates up to 600 kW. Mercedes estimates under ideal Level 3 charging conditions, the GT 53 could add 380 kilometres of range in 10 minutes of charging.
The GT 55 and GT 63 get a larger batter, with a capacity of 128 kW, and DC fast-charging capable of 710 kW. Mercedes estimates these two models could add up to 450 kilometres of range in 10 minutes of charging.
Keep in mind, Level 3 fast-chargers typically max out at a little over 300 kW in Canada.

Estimated range
Mercedes-Benz provided the GT SUV’s estimated driving range on a full charge. The estimates are based on the Euro-observed WLTP test cycle. In brackets, we include what those WLTP estimates roughly translate to our North American EPA/NRCan test standards.
Estimated range is as follows”
- GT 53 – 597 to 668 km (511 to 572 km); city range: 732 to 809 km (627 to 693 km)
- GT 55 and GT 63 – 620 to 700 km (531 to 599 km); city range: 719 to 806 km (616 to 690 km)

Performance specs
Mercedes-Benz also provided estimated performance figures for each of the three variants. Check them out.
GT 53
- Zero to 60 mph – 4.1 seconds, 3.7 with one-foot rollout
- Zero to 124 mph – 14.6 seconds, 13.8 with one-foot rollout
- Top speed – 230 km/h (143 mph)
- Boost duration – 53 seconds
GT 55
- Zero to 60 mph – 3.0 seconds, 2.7 with one-foot rollout
- Zero to 124 mph – 9.9 seconds, 9.4 with one-foot rollout
- Top speed – 270 km/h (168 mph) (optional)
- Boost duration – 55 seconds
GT 63

- Zero to 124 mph – 7.2 seconds, 6.8 with one-foot rollout
- Top speed – 270 km/h (168 mph)
- Boost duration – 63 seconds

Simulated AMG V8 sound
The SUV has an AMGForce Sport+ drive program, which reproduces class AMG engine notes.
The GT 55 and GT 63 get an AMG V8 sound while the GT 53 gets an AMG six-cylinder sound.
Furthermore, the SUV has various sounds for specific situations, such as when you approach the vehicle, unlock it, lock it or charge it and others.
The drive program also simulates gear changes, mimicking the shift pattern of the AMG Speedshift transmission. Mercedes said drivers can also use steering wheel paddles to manually change virtual gears.

GT SUV built for agility
The AMG GT SUV is a sporty vehicle and the automaker fitted it with features to make it go quick around corners.
The innovative AMG Active Ride Control+ suspension system, standard on the GT 63 and optional on the GT 55, provides active pitch and roll stabilization, which Mercedes said can give the driver driving precision as well as long-distance comfort.
It has three stage adjustable air springs, an integrated 8.2-litre pressure reservoir and a hydraulic interconnection of the dampers to enable rapid ride height adjustments. This includes speed-dependent lowering to reduce aerodynamic drag.
Furthermore, Mercedes said the vehicle’s multi-link suspension at the front and rear axles allows the SUV to achieve high lateral acceleration.
Other ride elements on the SUV include active rear-axle steering and the previously mentioned AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel-drive drivetrain.
An available AMGFOrce Sport+ drive program intensifies the driving level, Mercedes-Benz said.

Driver-focused interior
The interior is driver-focused, with controls and the 14-inch centre screen angled toward the driver.
The driver display measures 10.2 inches and there’s an optional front passenger screen that measures 14 inches.
The automaker created a sporty SUV that offers generous headroom and legroom for the rear-seat occupants. The rear fits up to three people.
The rear seatbacks can also fold down and have power-folding headrests.
The SUV also has a panoramic glass roof and the available Sky Control allows occupants to switch between a transparent or opaque roof.

Highly customizable interior and exterior
As in typical Mercedes-Benz fashion the AMG GT SUV can be customized to a great degree.
It offers more than 60 exclusive Manufaktur paint finishes. The AMG wheels can also be selected with optional colour accents.
Mercedes-Benz said the GT SUV will also debut new interior customization options.

Technology abounds
Another element, also typical of newer Mercedes vehicles, the SUV comes packing technology.
It has a connected software architecture and uses AI.
The MBUX infotainment system runs on Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which integrates various vehicle functions.
The MBUX also integrates artificial intelligence from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google.
