Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV skips CHAdeMO charging

The all-new electric vehicle will arrive with a standard NACS charge port for Level 3 charging and an SAE J1772 port for Level 1 and 2 charging.

Mitsubishi’s return to the electric vehicle segment marks a change in electric vehicle charging technology for the automaker.

The all-new Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback, an EV based on the Nissan Leaf, will come with several charging formats and none of them utilize the automaker’s long-time usage of the CHAdeMO charge port, which is more commonly used in Japan.

The 2027 Eclipse Sportback will utilize the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for Level 3 DC fast charging, capable of charging speeds of up 150 kW. NACS is the charge port type used at Tesla Superchargers as well as other providers.

Current Mitsubishi owners who already have charging infrastructure installed at home need not worry as their existing chargers will work.

For at-home Level 1 and Level 2 charging, the Eclipse Sportback has an SAE J1772 charge port, the same as the one used on the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Mitsubishi did not say how quick Level 2 charging will be, but considering the Eclipse Sportback is based on the Leaf, we can expect a similar on-board charger. On the Leaf, Level 2 charging tops out at 7.2 kW.

The Eclipse Sportback runs on a 75-kWh lithium-ion liquid-cooled battery pack.
