These plug-in hybrid SUVs want you to get Canada’s PHEV rebate

The Electric Vehicle Affordability Program offers a rebate of up to $2,500 for the purchase or lease of an eligible plug-in hybrid with a final price of no more than $50,000.

When the Canadian Liberal government launched the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program earlier this year it was to incentivize people purchasing electrified vehicles.

The program offers a rebate of up to $2,500 for the purchase or lease of an eligible plug-in hybrid, as well as $5,000 for EVs.

To qualify for the rebate, vehicles must be made in countries that Canada has a free-trade agreement with and the final purchase price cannot exceed $50,000. That final purchase price includes all the fees that dealers add at the time of the sale. EVs and PHEVs made in Canada don’t have a price limit.

In 2026, there are plenty of EVs available at prices of less than $50,000, but only three PHEVs. Those include the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid and the Kia Sportage PHEV. The Kia Niro PHEV that had been available at the start of this year is no longer listed as available on Kia Canada’s website, though there may still be some left on dealer lots.

There are, however, several PHEVs with prices that just crest above that $50,000 line and a few of them are discounted this month (June 2026).

The automakers even advertise these $50,000-plus PHEVs as potentially qualifying for the EVAP rebate should you be able to buy one for less than $50,000, almost as if begging you to chat with your local dealer to see what they could do to ease your entry into the vehicle … or to tease you into considering one even if it is priced above fifty grand.

Whatever the case, these are the June discounts on plug-in hybrid SUVs that get them closer to that $50,000 limit to qualify for an EVAP rebate.

Let’s begin.

2026 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid

Regular starting price: $56,096 (MSRP of $53,299)

Discount: $4,250 = $51,846

As you can see above, Hyundai’s popular compact SUV (pictured up top), which is available in a variety of powertrain choices, from ICE, to hybrid, to plug-in hybrid, still comes in above $50,000 but it’s much closer now.

The Tucson with the PHEV comes is only available with the Ultimate trim, which gets you high-end features such as heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, head-up display, Bose audio, remote smart parking and more.

2026 Mazda CX-70 Plug-in Hybrid

Regular starting price: $52,595 (MSRP of $48,999)

Discount: $1,000 = $51,595

Mazda launched the CX-70 for the 2025 model year, giving customers a version of the CX-90 but with two rows of seats instead of three. The SUV is available with a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain and Mazda Canada lowered the starting price of the PHEV version by nearly $4,000 in early June. Now, the company is offering an additional $1,000 discount to help sweeten the deal.

The CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid also has a $1,000 discount this month, bringing its starting price to $52,595.

2026 Kia Sorento PHEV

Regular starting price: $51,640 (MSRP of $48,695)

Discount: $1,000 = $50,640

The Kia Sorento is a midsize three-row SUV with seating for six as the middle row gets captain’s chairs. Like the other vehicles on this list, it’s available with a variety of powertrain choices, including a plug-in hybrid. The PHEV model can also be had in a variety of trim levels. What’s interesting is that moving up to the one-up EX trim, which normally costs $2,500 more than the base LX, carries a smaller penalty as the manufacturer is advertising a $2,200 discount on that model, bringing the purchase price to $51,940.

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Discount: $3,000 = $50,066

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been Canada’s top-selling plug-in hybrid four years running. The compact three-row SUV was updated for 2026, offering more standard content, such as a 12.3-inch centre display, Yamaha audio, and a larger battery than before, which results in more efficient gas/electric driving and an all-electric driving range of up to 72 kilometres.

Other low-cost plug-in hybrids

The June discounts help the above mentioned vehicles come within the $50,000 limit for EVAP’s PHEV rebate, but there are other low-cost PHEVs also worth mentioning.

They include:

June EV discounts

As mentioned above, EVAP also offers a rebate of up to $5,000 on eligible EVs, and there are many that are discounted in June.

NOTE TO READERS: Some of the offers mentioned above may be regional and not necessarily available everywhere. Check the automaker’s website for offers near you, or speak with your local dealer.
