Mitsubishi has revived the Pajero, which a couple decades ago was sold in Canada as the Montero.

The latest version, a three-row off-road SUV, is launching as the company’s new flagship vehicle.

Canadians may or may not get it.

The company said a decision has not yet been made as to whether it will be sold in Canada.

The new Pajero is assembled in Thailand and will launch in that country first, during fiscal year 2026, while Japan and Australia will get it in the same year.

The company plans to sell the new Pajero in about 100 countries, but the named markets, so far, include ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Latin America and the Middle East.

The latest generation of the Pajero features a bold design with an upright stance.

Mitsubishi said the SUV embodies the long-standing Pajero values of off-road capability, reliability and comfort. For the latest model, it also adds another layer, prestige, the company said.

Four-wheel drive

The off-road SUV sits on a rigid ladder frame chassis.

The Pajero gets Mitsubishi Motors’ Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, which integrates acceleration, cornering and braking controls.

It also features Super Select 4WD-II, which balances off-road performance with daily driving comfort, the company said.

The company said the Pajero also has a carefully tuned suspension that helps maintain tire contact with the road.

It has a ground clearance of 230 millimetres, and an approach angle of 30.4 degrees, a ramp breakover angle of 22.6 degrees and a departure angle of 25.8 degrees.

A front-to-rear weight distribution of 52:48 also helps maintain tire contact on uneven surfaces.

Powertrain

The latest Pajero is powered by a turbocharged 2.4-litre diesel engine that produces a maximum of 354 lb.-ft. (480 Nm) of torque.

The engine is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission with sport mode.

Mitsubishi called its latest powertrain smooth, responsive and quiet.

Dimensions

The new Pajero is nearly five metres long, measuring 4,920 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,910 mm tall.

Interior comfort

The SUV is intended to be rugged, but also comfortable for the people inside it.

The seven-seater is built with generous space in all three rows and the driver sits higher for an improved view of the road.

Second-row seats get 150 millimetres of sliding range and a tumble feature to improve entry and exit into the third row.

The SUV has a three-zone automatic climate control with independent temperature settings in all three rows.

The seats have ventilation that covers the entire seat.

A Yamaha sound system with 12 speakers is included in the Pajero. It features noise compensation technology to adjust the volume based on vehicle speed.

The 14.3-inch infotainment display features 16 background themes.

The digital display has an available triple-gauge layout, reminiscent of older Pajeros, which display information such as altitude, compass heading, temperature, vehicle pitch and roll angles and Active Yaw Control settings.

Safety and driver support

The Pajero gets a host of advanced safety and driver assistance features, including Mi-Pilot, Mitsubishi’s highway single-lane driving assistance system, which includes adaptive cruse control with lane keep asisst.

The vehicle also has eight airbags, including a centre airbag, which will help keep the two front-row occupants from hitting each other during a collision.
