Audi Nuvolari looks ready to go as fast as the man it’s named after

Why should Audi let Lemborghini have all the fun with a V8 engine that can spin up to 10,000 rpm?

Clearly, the folks at Audi wanted to get in on the action too, and have created their own supercar that shares components with the Lamborghini Temerario, except the Audi gets even more power and will be even more exclusive.

Audi revealed the Nuvolari, the company’s first-ever supercar with a hybrid powertrain. The car you see in these photos is a near-production prototype, Audi said.

“With the Audi Nuvolari, we are accelerating technological progress,” said Gernot Döllner, chairman of the board of management of Audi AG, in a news release. “It shows what is possible when the focus is on technology, performance, and execution through teamwork – and when we achieve progress together.”

The Nuvolari will be limited to just 499 cars worldwide and deliveries are expected to start in the first half of 2027.

Powertrain details

Now, let’s get to the goods.

The car is powered by a 4-ltre biturbo V8 engine that can spin up to 10,000 rpm. The engine produces 789 hp, the same as in the Temerario.

Working in conjunction with the V8 are a trio of axial flux electric motors. Each one produces 110 kW (148 hp).

Powering the e-motors is a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 7.3 kWh.

Combined, the system produces 986 hp (1,001 PS), up from the Temerario’s 907 hp.

Acceleration

Audi provided some performance figures.

Numbers include:

  • Zero to 100 km/h – 2.6 seconds
  • Zero to 200 km/h – 6.8 seconds
  • Top speed – More than 350 km/h (217 mph)

“With the Audi Nuvolari, our entire team has once again demonstrated its technical expertise, innovative strength, and dedication,” Audi chief technology officer Rouven Mohr said in a news release.

“This is reflected not only in the vehicle’s performance and its Formula 1-inspired technologies, but also in the ability to transfer innovations quickly and precisely into a production vehicle.”

Wild design

It would be silly to talk about the car without discussing its wild looks.

The Nuvolari uses Audi’s latest design philosophy, which was previewed with the Concept C, an electric two-seater.

To describe the car, Audi uses such terms as taut surfaces, monolithic volume, powerful stance, and so on. The appearance is certainly eye catching and unique.

Where the Nuvolari is a supercar that uses Lamborghini bones, much like the former Audi R8 did, the Concept C previewed a bit of a mini-me version of the Nuvolari, much like the former Audi TT resembled a smaller R8.

Audi’s latest supercar uses a signature Titanium colour, which was used on the Concept C and Audi’s Formula 1 race car.

The car also uses carbon elements.

The man behind the name

The car is named after Tazio Nuvolari (1892-1953), nicknamed the Flying Mantuan. The Italian race car driver found much success in racing, first in motorbikes and later in autos, with his biggest successes in Grand Prix racing.

Ferdinand Porsche called him “the greatest driver of the past, the present and the future.”

More details about the car are available on the Audi Canada website.
