Subaru is giving Canadian car buyers a cheaper way into the hybrid version of the company’s popular Crosstrek compact SUV.
The automaker has launched a new, less-expensive hybrid trim called Hybrid Onyx for the 2027 model year.
The Hybrid Onyx model has a starting Canadian manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $36,995, which is $3,500 cheaper than the already available Hybrid Limited.
Hybrid Onyx and Hybrid Limited are the only two trims of the 2027 Crosstrek that have a hybrid powertrain; all others are powered by a standard gasoline-burning 2.5-litre boxer engine.
The former 2-litre base engine was dropped at the end of 2025.
Powertrain differences
The ICE powertrain features a 2.5-litre boxer engine with 180 hp and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission sending power to the symmetrical full-time all-wheel-drive system.
The hybrid models are powered by Subaru’s e-Boxer series-parallel hybrid powertrain, which combines the 2.5-litre engine with an electric motor for a total system output of 194 hp.
Subaru said the hybrid is fitted with a 63-litre fuel tank and can travel more than 1,000 kilometres on a tank of gas.
Features of new Hybrid Onyx
The Hybrid Onyx model is similar to the Onyx model, save it has the hybrid powertrain. Both Onyx versions ride on black-finish 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and they have yellow accents, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, reverse automatic braking and dual-function X-Mode.
The Hybrid Onyx also adds a 12.3-inch digital driver display with navigation, a feature that is exclusive to the hybrid-powered Crosstreks.
