The team at a BMW dealership in St. Catharines, Ont. blew way past the estimated driving range of the all-electric, all-new iX3.
The team from Performance BMW set out to drive the 2027 iX3 50 xDrive from Niagara Falls to Quebec City, roughly a 950-kilometre route, and when they got there they kept on going, reaching a total distance of 1,011.1 kilometres on a single charge.
The 2027 iX3 50 xDrive with 20-inch wheels and fitted with summer tires has a Natural Resources Canada-estimated range of 698 kilometres.
Driver Geoffrey Hills, who travelled with two other people, set out on the journey at night, which allowed him to avoid what is typically horrendous daytime traffic through the Greater Toronto Area.
To get such a long single-charge range, Hills drove the car in Max Range mode, at reduced speeds, and he sacrificed his comfort by keeping the windows closed and the air conditioner off.
The journey took about 15 hours and the vehicle averaged an energy usage of 10.9 kWh per 100 kilometres.
