The much-anticipated Jaguar Type 01 has been revealed.

The British marque unveiled the all-new all-electric four-door GT, which will serve as the springboard to Jaguar’s new era.

The electric four-seat sedan offers bold styling with a long hood – or bonnet as the British call it – with a low roofline, short front overhang and wheels so large the car looks like it could be a Hot Wheels. The wheels measure 23 inches.

The Jaguar Type 01 was designed and engineered in the United Kingdom, where it is assembled.

“From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distills the essence of Jaguar into a car for a new era. Jaguars should be objects of desire and culturally relevant – that’s their natural habitat and where Jaguar is returning,” Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover said in a news release.

“Type 01 is the foundation of the brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to reinvent Jaguar for the 21st century.”

Range and charging speed

The Type 01 rides on an 850-volt electric architecture and has a battery with a usable capacity of 118 kWh, which translates to huge range.

Jaguar estimates the Type 01 will be able to drive up to 644 kilometres (400 miles) on a single charge, and that is based on the tougher EPA/NRCan testing standards.

What’s more, Jaguar estimates the vehicle will be able to sustain highway speeds for a distance of 515 kilometres (320 miles).

Helping the big Jag achieve its range is a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd, which makes this car the most aerodynamic Jaguar yet.

When using 350-kW DC fast-charging, Jaguar estimates the EV will be able to add 321 kilometres of range in as little as 13 minutes of charging.

Power and performance figures

Unlike Jaguars of old, there’s no V12 engine up front, but there’s massive power anyway.

The tri-motor electric powertrain delivers 1,016 hp (1,030 PS) and 1,007 lb.-ft. (1,365 Nm) of torque.

That’s enough power to propel the large and heavy luxury car from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.

Accelerating from 100 to 180 km/h is said to take four seconds.

Jaguar said the car’s intelligent torque vectoring puts power down exactly where it’s needed.

The car also manages a 50:50 weight distribution.

The automaker also called it the most technically advanced Jaguar to date, with Jaguar filing more than 360 patent applications to develop it.

Refined interior

The four-seater features a central spine that runs the length of the cabin to create individual spaces for all four occupants.

The outer sides of the interior mirror the central spine to give the interior a longitudinal nature.

The interior also features a 24-inch single-glass OLED screen that places all the information the driver needs right in front of them.

There’s an additional seven-inch display between the driver and front passenger, providing key controls in the centre screen.

Jaguar said the car has an immersive audio system that creates a wall of sound using a full-width, full-range panoramic soundbar with sensory audio seats. The panoramic soundbar is an automotive-first.
