Your Volvo EX60 and EX90 will soon tell you if there’s a moose on the road ahead

Volvo is updating its connected safety technology in the EX60 and EX90 electric SUVs to offer real-time hazard alerts.

Volvo, the brand known for constantly advancing safety in its vehicles, is pioneering new safety tech.

The automaker said it is updating the connected safety technology in the EX60 and EX90 electric SUVs to offer new real-time hazard alerts.

The alerts are based on data shared from other Volvo cars.

The latest update includes the following new features:

  • Large Animal Alert – This can warn other drivers if a large animal is detected on or near the road ahead.
  • Vulnerable Road User Alert – This can warn other drivers if pedestrians and cyclists are detected ahead on or near highways.
  • Roadwork Alert – This can warn other drivers when roadwork is detected ahead.
  • Accident Ahead Alert – This can warn other drivers of crashes further ahead, using real-time data from connected Volvo cars or traffic management centres.

As illustrated in the image provided by Volvo, the Large Animal Alert offers drivers an alert if a large animal, such as a moose, is observed by other Volvo vehicles that are also equipped with the connected safety features.

While not available in Canada, these vehicles in Europe get the added advantage of being able to share information with Data for Road Safety, which allows hazard data to be shared with vehicles from other brands as well.

The automaker said more than one million Volvo cars (globally) have activated connected safety tech.

“Built on decades of our real-world safety insight, these innovations represent another step towards our vision of zero collisions,” said Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre, in a news release. “Every time a Volvo car shares safety intelligence, it helps other drivers prepare earlier to avoid accidents and feel safer.”

Software update includes audio upgrade

The latest features are arriving on the EX60 and EX90 as part of a new software update that is also bringing Spatial Audio support to Apple CarPlay on EX90 vehicles equipped with Dolby Atmos technology.

Volvo said the latest tech will be available in the EX60 and EX90, which are sold in Canada, as well as the ES90, which is not sold here.

The timing of the new features’ arrival will vary by vehicle.
