Mitsubishi’s Canadian lineup expansion may not include the Montero

Mitsubishi currently sells four models in Canada and plans to increase that to six by 2027. Its Momentum 2030 strategy calls for further expansion in the coming years.

Mitsubishi is planning to expand its Canadian lineup over the coming years, but the revived Montero that has been making headlines of late may not be part of that strategy.

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada offered a bit of an update regarding the Mitsubishi Motors Momentum 2030 plan, after Mitsubishi Motors held a private meeting with dealers in Canada.

While the strategy offers good news for Canadian consumers as the Japanese automaker plans to increase its lineup here between now and 2030, the jury is still out on whether the Montero will be offered in Canada.

The revived ladder-frame rugged SUV, which is known as the Pajero in other markets, is being revived, and its reveal is expected soon.

The Montero was last sold in Canada in 2006 but some markets continued to get the Pajero through to 2021.

The automaker said it hasn’t decided whether the Montero will be offered here – in other words, it may come here, or it might not.

“While no decision has been made regarding a Canadian introduction of this vehicle, the model’s return strengthens Mitsubishi Motors globally by reconnecting the brand with one of its most iconic and celebrated nameplates,” Mitsubishi Canada said in a news release.

Two new vehicles planned by 2027

Mitsubishi currently sells four vehicle models in Canada. Those are the RVR, Eclipse Cross, Outlander and Outlander PHEV.

The automaker plans to expand that to six models by 2027 by introducing the all-new Eclipse Sportback battery-electric vehicle, which is set to arrive in late 2026, and an off-road-focused version of the Outlander, planned for an early 2027 arrival.

The rugged Outlander will get its own name, which will be revealed later.

More vehicles coming by 2030

Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 calls for a further lineup expansion, as well as an expansion of the dealer network and a plan to growth the company’s market share in Canada.

The automaker said its North American strategy includes a greater focus on adventure-oriented vehicles as more customers are looking for more rugged vehicles.

As part of that plan, Mitsubishi may return to the pickup truck segment in Canada through a collaboration with Nissan.

The company also plans to increase its electrified vehicle offerings.

“The updated Momentum 2030 product plan we have shared with our dedicated network of dealers across Canada has helped cement in their mind how committed Mitsubishi Motors is to the Canadian market,” said Kenichi Kawaji, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, in a news release.

“We will celebrate our 25th anniversary in Canada next year, and this updated Momentum 2030 plan gives us a clear path forward. The product lineup Mitsubishi Motors will deliver in the years to come responds directly to feedback from our dealers and our customers, and strengthens the long-term future of the brand.”
