Infiniti QX65 has a colour that contains real gold – here’s its Canadian price

The Sunfire Red colour is inspired by the Regal Red that was available on the Nissan GT-R in 2015.

Infiniti has taken inspiration from an iconic car from Nissan’s past to create a new colour option for a new vehicle model.

The automaker has created a colour called Sunfire Red.

The colour uses real gold flakes, though the automaker doesn’t specify just how much of the paint is comprised of gold.

This latest eye-catching colour is an option on the newly launched 2027 QX65, a sporty midsize SUV.

The new QX65 was inspired by Infiniti’s iconic FX SUVs, which were popular earlier this millennium.

The colour was inspired by one that had been available on the legendary Nissan GT-R.

Back in 2015, the automaker debuted a colour called Regal Red, which also used real gold within the red paint.

The latest colour, Sunfire Red, uses a tri-coat process, including a red ground coat, a transparent mid coat that contains tiny flakes of gold-coated glass, and a clear coat.

What makes the paint unique is that different shades of red and gold vary based on the viewing angle, lighting and time of day.

“The colour is so deep and rich that it requires multiple layers. A two-coat version would have washed out the gold effect,” said David Lipka, senior manager of materials engineering at Nissan Technical Center North America, in a news release.

“Because the gold is bonded to microscopic glass flakes, the visual impact spreads across every body panel. It gives QX65 a colour identity that stands apart from other red paints on the market.”

What is the price of Sunfire Red?

The 2027 Infiniti QX65 is available in three grade levels and the cost of the Sunfire Red option depends on the trim.

On the entry-level Luxe and mid-grade Sport trims it costs $750.

On the top-of-the-line Autograph model the price rises to $1,200 as on this model it’s offered as part of a two-colour option, pairing the Sunfire Red colour on the lower body of the vehicle with an Obsidian Black on the upper half, as seen at the top of this article.

Those colour options are on top of the QX65’s regular prices.

Starting Canadian prices of each trim are:

  • Luxe – $70,509 (MSRP of $66,945 plus fees and levies)
  • Sport – $73,509 (MSRP of $69,945)
  • Autograph – $79,809 (MSRP of $76,245)
