Watch out, Porsche and Lucid, Polestar is coming for your electric vehicle sales.

The Swedish EV maker that’s part of the Volvo brand has unveiled the Polestar 5 with some truly stratospheric power numbers.

The electric sedan, or grand tourer as Polestar calls it, is launching with two powertrain options, the Polestar 5 Dual motor and Polestar 5 Performance.

Polestar 5 Dual motor

The Polestar 5 Dual motor features the following performance numbers:

  • Power – 737 hp (748 European horses)
  • Torque – 599 lb.-ft.
  • Zero to 100 km/h – 3.9 seconds
  • Top speed – 250 km/h (155 mph)

Polestar 5 Performance

The Polestar 5 Performance features the following performance numbers:

  • Power – 872 hp (884 European horses)
  • Torque – 749 lb.-ft.
  • Zero to 100 km/h – 3.2 seconds
  • Top speed – 250 km/h (155 mph)

Helping the car slice through air are features such as a specifically designed aero-efficient lightbar with rear vent and integrated rear diffuser, a flush frameless glass and retractable door handles.

The car’s aero features result in a drag coefficient of 0.24 Cd on the Dual motor model.

Supplying the energy to the electric motors is a 112-kWh (106-kWh usable) lithium-ion NMC battery, with an 800-volt architecture.

DC fast charging is available at speeds up to 350 kW, while the on-board AC charger allows for up to 19-kW Level 2 charging speeds.

“Polestar 5 is bringing the future to our present. Our vision for Polestar’s design, technology, and sustainability direction is no longer a dream but a reality our customers can buy. With its pure Scandinavian design inside and out, unique platform, powerful motors, sophisticated chassis, cutting-edge technology, and consciously sustainable materials, the Polestar 5 is a guiding star for the industry and the perfect Polestar flagship,” Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller said in a news release.

Design

Polestar went after a bold design with modern and minimalist surfaces and without any unnecessary embellishment, with a design inspired by aviation, the company said.

The car has Polestar’s largest panoramic glass roof, measuring more than six feet long and four feet wide.

Buyers can choose from six colour choices, including two matte finishes.

Interior

The car has seating for up to five, but is intended for four, with Polestar calling it a 4+1 configuration.

The front Recaro seats feature a low hip point and supportive bolstering and are finished in Charcoal MicroTech as standard or optional Bridge of Weir Nappa leather in Charcoal or Zinc.

The seat material comes from animal-welfare-secured, chrome-free, natural byproduct of the food industry facilities.

The seats offer heating, electric adjustment, ventilation and massage features.

Technology

The car features a 14.5-inch centre display running on the Android Automotive operating system with Google built-in, which features four dynamic tiles that can be customized for the driver’s choice of function shortcuts.

A 10-speaker audio system is standard and a Bowers & Wilkins 21-speaker audio system is available. The optional sound system features Tweeter-on-Top technology and 1,680 watts of power. There’s also a sound bar behind the rear occupants’ heads and active road noise cancellation.

Driver assistance

Advanced driver assistance systems include SmartZone, housing sensors, radar, and forward-facing parking camera. There are 11 vision cameras, one driver monitoring camera, one mid-range radar and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

The Pilot Assist can adjust the vehicle’s speed and in-lane position at speeds up to 149 km/h (93 mph).

Ride quality

Polestar said the Polestar 5 sits on a brand-new, bespoke, hot-cured bonded aluminum platform, which is said to be lightweight and rigid. The automaker said the platform offers the car greater torsional rigidity than you’d find in a two-seat sports car or supercar.

“Our R&D teams worked tirelessly to develop the Polestar Performance Architecture from the ground up, and it’s paid dividends in how this performance focused GT drives. Alongside the in-house developed rear motor, 800-volt electrical architecture, and innovative engineering decisions, it makes Polestar 5 an incredible all-round grand tourer,” Polestar chief technology officer Lutz Stiegler said in the release.
