Nissan has set a world record for distance traveled in an SUV with a non-plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The company managed to drive a Nissan Qashqai powered by an e-Power hybrid powertrain a distance of 1,980 kilometres on a single tank of gas.

That set the Guinness World Record title for the longest journey completed by a non-plug-in extended-range electric vehicle SUV without external charging or refuelling.

The Qashqai is not sold in Canada; however, the powertrain will arrive here in an all-new 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid, the company said.

The record-setting journey took place in Colombia July 14 to 17.

The team drove from Bogotá to the Caribbean coast and covered a wide variety of road, traffic and driving conditions, Nissan said.

Every stage of the journey was independently monitored and verified by Guinness World Records judges, who certified the achievement following a detailed review process.

E-Power offers EV-like driving

Nissan’s e-Power hybrid powertrain is different from most commonly used hybrids in that this system doesn’t switch between electric power and internal combustion engine power to motivate the wheels.

The electric motor always drives the wheels.

The vehicle’s engine generates electricity, when needed, which is stored in a battery, which then sends the power to the e-motor to drive vehicle.

Nissan said this gives the vehicle an EV-like driving experience, offering instant response and a refined and smooth ride.

The system also features the company’s 5-in-1 modular powertrain, which integrates the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser into a compact and efficient package.
