On the day Honda announced it is indefinitely suspending electric vehicle production plans in Canada, it teased a pair of upcoming hybrid-powered vehicles.

One will be a sedan and the other a sport utility vehicle.

Honda revealed the new prototypes on May 14, the same day it announced the indefinite suspension of what would have been an EV manufacturing value chain comprising of four facilities in Ontario. This came two months after Honda permanently cancelled three EV models that would have been assembled in Ohio.

Instead, the company intends to focus its resources on hybrid vehicles. Hybrids pair fuel-burning engines and electric motors and batteries to improve efficiency.

Honda said the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype previews a next-gen Honda sedan. It could be a new Honda Accord.

The company also showed the Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype, which looks something along the lines of an Acura RDX.

They are among 15 new hybrid models the company plans to launch globally, and primarily in North America, by 2030.

“Honda will reallocate more development and production resources into hybrid models to accelerate the market launch ahead of the original schedule and increase the number of compelling products,” said Toshihiro Mibe, global CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., in a news release.

“We have made steady progress in the development of hybrid vehicle technologies, where Honda has strengths, based on our belief that hybrid models will continue to be the key to addressing environmental challenges.”

The company plans to launch new vehicles using an all-new hybrid platform starting in 2027.

Additionally, the company is working on next-gen advanced driver assistance system, which are planned to go into production models starting in 2028.

What’s more, Honda plans to make all its North American plants capable of producing hybrid models, and it plans to launch large-size hybrids in 2029.
