Canada’s top-selling passenger car is undergoing a few enhancements for the 2027 model year.
Honda announced the 2027 Civic is getting a new Sport-L trim level. On the sedan, the Sport-L is one up from the base model, while on the hatchback, it’s the new entry-level model.
What’s more, the top-of-the-line Civic model, the Sport Touring Hybrid, is borrowing a nifty feature from the Prelude. It’s getting the Prelude’s sporty S+ Shift feature.
The Civic had been named the Canadian Car of the Year in 2025 and 2026, and the hybrid model was named the North American Car of the Year in 2025.

What’s is the new Sport-L trim?
The Sport-L model is powered by the Civic’s gasoline-burning powertrain and gives it some of the premium features that had previously only been available on the hybrid models.
New 2027 Civic Sport-L features include:
- Leather upholstery (previously exclusive to Sport Touring Hybrid)
- Heated rear seats (previously exclusive to Sport Touring Hybrid)
- Power-adjustable front seats (previously exclusive to Sport Touring Hybrid)
- Dual-zone climate control (for hatchback)
- Vanity mirrors with illumination (for hatchback)
- Silver-coloured interior trim (previously exclusive to Sport Touring Hybrid)
- Heated Steering (for hatchback)

What is Honda S+ Shift?
The hybrid-powered Civic operates without a transmission as it uses electric motors to motivate the vehicle while the on-board engine supplies the car’s electrical bits with power.
The Honda S+ Shift is a drive mode that debuted on the Prelude. It simulates transmission shifts to increase driver engagement.
This shifting also includes virtual rev-matched downshifts and gear holding. It also enhances the engine sounds inside the vehicle.
Honda powertrain choices
Gas-powered Civics have a 2-litre four-cylinder engine with 150 hp and 133 lb.-ft. of torque.
Hybrid-powered Civics have an electrified 1.5-litre turbo engine with 200 hp and 232 lb.-ft. of torque.
