It appears a lot of people want their off-roaders to be truly capable of off-road adventuring.

Jeep announced it has sold one million Rubicon models since the off-road trim level was introduced on the Wrangler SUV back in 2003 and more recently on the Gladiator pickup truck.

The Rubicon trim was created to be the most off-road-capable version of the Wrangler and Gladiator.

It’s named after the Rubicon Trail in Californiaโ€™s Sierra Nevada Mountains.

โ€œReaching one million Jeepโ€ฏRubicon vehicles sold is a powerful testament to the passion of our owners and the unmatched authenticity of the Jeep brand,โ€ Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said in a news releease. โ€œFor decades, Rubicon has represented the purest expression of Jeep off-road capability. That legacy has been shaped not just by our engineers, but by the global community of off-road enthusiasts who push these vehicles to their limits and inspire us to raise the bar. We continue to listen to our customers, and every evolution of Rubicon reflects what they value most, authentic capability, proven durability and meaningful innovation delivered at a better value.โ€

The automaker said the Rubicon grade has set the standard for factory-engineered, off-road capability since its debut.

The original Wrangler Rubicon featured Tru-Lok locking differentials, a Rock-Track 4:1 transfer case, and heavy-duty underbody protection.

Today’s Rubicon Wranglers and Gladiators build on that legacy with features such as traction-management technology, Off-Road+ modes, Selec-Speed Control with Sand/Stuck recovery, lockers usable in high-range four-wheel drive, available WARN winches and available tires up to 35 inches, among other features.
