The partnership between Nissan and Mitsubishi will spawn a Mitsubishi battery-electric vehicle based on Nissan’s next-generation Leaf.
Mitsubishi said that EV will be available in Canada, as well as the United States, starting in the summer of 2026.
“Mitsubishi Motors continues to see positive growth in Canada with a lineup that supports the vehicle preferences of Canadians,” said Kenichi Kawaji, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, in a news release. “Our Momentum 2030 business plan set out a path to the future for our dealer partners and this upcoming BEV is an exciting next step in us delivering on that plan.”
The company’s Momentum 2030 lays out plans to launch a new or significantly revised vehicle every year between 2026 and 2030.
The first vehicle to launch under that plan is the updated 2025 Outlander, which became available earlier this year.

In mid-2024, Mitsubishi released a teaser image of these upcoming new or updated vehicles. While it didn’t specify which is the upcoming EV, various automotive media outlets suggest it’s likely the small vehicle that’s the third from the left.
Mitsubishi said more details about the upcoming EV will be announced in future announcements. This will include details about its design, specs, price, on-sale time and its name.
Mitsubishi points out it offered the first mass-produced EV in Canada when it launched the i-MiEV in 2012, as well as the first plug-in hybrid SUV when it launched the Outlander PHEV in 2018.
“We believe Canadians today want a mix of powertrain options,” Kawaji said in the release. “Adding a battery-electric vehicle to our lineup will deliver a blend of internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, so that our customers have the choice of technology that best suits their needs.”
