Nissan intends to release a host of new vehicle models over the next few years, indicating 10 new or refreshed vehicles are destined for Canada and the United States.

Several of these models will be launching this year, beginning with the next generation of the Leaf electric vehicle.

“Over the next two years, we are excited to roll out an impressive lineup that will redefine the road,” said chief performance officer Guillaume Cartier in a news release. “This includes the reimagined Nissan Leaf, and a daring new Micra EV. But that’s not all – we’re refreshing our range of SUVs to elevate the driving experience, and our next-generation e-Power promises new levels of refinement and efficiency. We are committed to investing in products that embody the very best of Nissan. To our passionate fans and loyal owners around the world, I can assure you, this is just the beginning of an exciting journey ahead.”

Nissan has not offered a hybrid in Canada, but the brand now intends to rectify that. Its upcoming lineup will include hybrids (e-Power) and plug-in hybrids. New EVs and vehicles with internal combustion engines are also planned.

Next-gen Nissan Leaf

The third-generation Nissan Leaf will shed its car hatchback style and become a crossover SUV as it moves up to the company’s CMF-EV platform, which underpins the higher-up Ariya crossover SUV.

Nissan said the new Leaf will be a spacious family friendly crossover with improvements in aerodynamics.

Alloy wheels measuring up to 19 inches and a panoramic moonroof will be available.

The North American market Leaf will also come standard with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port – that’s the one used at Tesla Superchargers.

The Leaf’s new EV powertrain will also deliver significantly improved driving range over the existing model, Nissan said.

Nissan said further details will be revealed mid-2025.

Updated and new Rogue

A few things are happening with the Rogue, the company’s popular compact SUV.

Later this year, the existing Rogue will gain an available plug-in hybrid powertrain, which will make it the company’s first PHEV model in North America.

Production of the next generation of the Rogue will begin in fiscal year 2026.

The fourth-gen Rogue will be the first Nissan vehicle to offer the company’s e-Power hybrid powertrain in Canada and the U.S. The fourth-gen Rogue will also be available with a traditional internal combustion engine, but the automaker said it will be more powerful and efficient than the current one, as well as a plug-in hybrid model.

New e-Power powertrain

While Nissan’s hybrid powertrain is new to Canada, the company has been producing hybrids in other markets, and has sold 1.6 million hybrid vehicles since 2016.

The hybrid system that will be launching in Canada is the company’s third-generation e-Power powertrain.

The powertrain features a 1.5-litre engine and what the company calls a new 5-in-1 system, which shares components with the company’s latest EV powertrain. A lithium-ion battery sends power to an electric motor.

The third-gen e-Power system is said to be more efficient than the company’s existing hybrid powertrain, with up to 15 per cent improvement in fuel economy at high speeds compared to the second-gen e-Power system.

Nissan said the electric motor is capable of powering the vehicle alone, resulting in an EV-like driving experience, offering powerful and responsive acceleration and quiet operation.

‘Full speed ahead’

“North America is a key market and we are taking quick actions to get us back to growth and set the stage for the exciting products to come,” said Christian Meunier, chairman, Nissan Americas, in the news release.

“We’re strengthening our retail partnerships to deliver high customer satisfaction and hear the voice of the market. Our dealers are fully engaged and enthusiastic for the future.

“We’re simplifying our operations and retail programs so that we can attack our cost structures, allowing us to deliver the right products to our customers, when they want them, where they need them, and for the right price.

“With these actions, and continued investments in our business, we expect an accelerated recovery, supported by strong sales of the fantastic new products already in market, and future models on the way. Full speed ahead!”
