Volvo has raised the floor of its EX30 compact SUV to create a small all-terrain electric vehicle, the EX30 Cross Country.
The new model remains small, but is intended for people who want big experiences.
“We launched our first Cross Country car over 25 years ago, and this concept of durable and all-weather cars is core to the Volvo brand,” said Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan in a news release. “In Sweden we face harsh winters, but we also like to make the most of them by getting out and exploring our amazing nature, even when it’s minus 20 Celsius outside. That’s why we want to deliver a fully rounded experience, not simply a car, to our EX30 Cross Country customers.”

Volvo said the car is higher off the ground than the standard EX30, features all-wheel drive, chunky front and rear skidplates and wheelarch extensions for a more rugged look, and some unique design features, including special dark colouring on the front shield and trunk.
There’s also a piece of art with the Kebnekaise mountain range in Arctic Sweden.

Interior storage spaces
On the inside, occupants will find plenty of storage spaces.
Volvo removed the speakers from the doors and used a soundbar in the dashboard instead. As a result, there are large storage compartments.
The glove compartment is under the centre console so that both the driver and passenger can easily reach it.
There’s a central storage tunnel between the driver and passenger that can slide out as cup holder. There’s another large storage compartment on the floor between the driver and passenger.
There’s a storage box that slides out from beneath the central tunnel for rear-seat occupants. It’s removable and washable. The liftgate has a “Will it fit?” guide to help you figure out how much you can pack in it.

Tech
The EX30 Cross Country comes with Google built-in, for access to Google Maps and other apps.
The Volvo EX30 app allows you to precondition your car before you return to it.
The vehicle also features braking and steering support to help you avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, and if a sensor detects the driver is distracted or tired, the car will give them a nudge.

The driving range will be announced at a later date.
The EX30 Cross Country will be available in Canada later this year.
Pricing was not announced.
