The folks at Mercedes-AMG have begun cold-weather testing of the prototype of an upcoming high-performance electric SUV that is being built entirely in-house.
Most AMG vehicles are high-performance versions of Mercedes-Benz models, but just a few are AMG-only vehicles. The upcoming full-size SUV will be just the sixth model fully developed by the AMG division in its 57-year-history, and its first SUV.
The full-size SUV will be the second model built on the all-electric AMG.EA platform.
Mercedes-Benz said the winter testing in northern Sweden – near the Arctic Circle – is the first test location for the upcoming SUV. It’s the same location where an upcoming four-door “coupe” began its first testing season this spring.
“At temperatures well below freezing, the interaction of all components is thoroughly tested,” the company said in a news release.
“The new SUV also showcases the pioneering role of the high-performance drive in the innovative all-electric architecture. This includes the use of axial-flux motors and a new high-performance battery concept.”
