Subaru has created something of a Forester mash-up.
Last year, the automaker unveiled a new hybrid version of the popular SUV as well as a Wilderness version.
Now, the automaker has mashed together the best of both to create the Subaru Forester Wilderness Hybrid.
It features the same off-road-ready bits of the non-hybrid Wilderness model and pairs that with Subaru’s e-Boxer Hybrid powertrain.

Powertrain
The powertrain features a 2.5.-litre four-cylinder boxer engine paired with electric motors and a lithium-ion battery with a power output of 194 hp. That’s a 14-hp increase over the non-hybrid.
Power is sent to the wheels via a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.
The hybrid powertrain uses a series-parallel configuration, which the company said provides seamless integration with the symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.

Off-road bits
The symmetrical all-wheel drive features the X-Mode dual-mode system with Hill Descent Control.
Drivers can choose Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings for improved off-road-worthiness.
The Wilderness rides 236 mm off the ground, up from the non-Wilderness’ 220-mm ground clearance.
Subaru fitted the suspension with sound-absorbing materials and structural adhesives and a lighter and stiffer chassis for improved off-road and on-road comfort.
The SUV rides on Wilerness-exlcusive 17-inch matte black wheels shod with Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires.
Approach, breakover and departure angles were increased compared to the standard Forester Hybrid model.
This includes:
- Approach angle – 23.5 degrees versus 19 degrees
- Breakover angle – 20.6 degrees versus 19.3 degrees
- Departure angle – 25.5 degrees versus 24.6 degrees
The Wilderness Hybrid also has ladder-type roof rails with an 800-pound static load capacity.

Interior
An 11.6-inch multimedia centre screen with navigation takes up the centre of the dashboard. It includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The driver gets a standard 12.3-inch gauge cluster that is configurable and features Apple Maps integration.
A Harman Kardon sound system with 11 speakers and 576 watts is available.
Wilderness models are equipped with an exclusive weather-resistant grey textured StarTex seating material, all-weather mats and a cargo area protector.
Subaru’s suite of EyeSight driver assist technologies is standard.
The 2027 Subaru Forester Wilderness Hybrid is expected to be available in late 2026.
