The most powerful production-series Subaru is now a three-row electric SUV.

Subaru of America unveiled the all-new Getaway, which is launching for the 2027 model year.

You’ll notice exterior similarities with the newly launched Toyota Highlander, with which it shares components, but the Subaru gets tons more power.

The Subaru Getaway comes standard with a symmetrical all-wheel-drive dual-motor powertrain with 420 hp.

That power allows the midsize EV to hustle from zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds, Subaru said. Towing capacity is rated at 3,500 pounds.

All trims of the Getaway get the 420-hp powertrain setup. As a comparison, Toyota’s Highlander offers a front-wheel-drive 221-hp or all-wheel-drive 338-hp powertrain.

Off-road capability

The Getaway has 210 mm (8.3 inches) of ground clearance and the electric powertrain includes X-Mode with a dual-mode system allowing drivers to select Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes, as well as Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control.

Range and charging

Buyers will have two battery capacity options when shopping for the EV.

The Getaway will launch in late 2026 with a long-range lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 95.8 kWh. Subaru estimates a driving range of more than 483 kilometres (300 miles) on models equipped with the larger battery.

Sometime in 2027, models with a smaller 77-kWh capacity battery will become available. Subaru said more details on the standard-range Getaway will be announced closer to market launch.

A North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port is standard and the Getaway can fast charge at speeds of up to 150 kW, which the automaker said will recharge the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes.

Interior space

The Getaway will face stiff competition, including its twin, the Toyota Highlander, as well as the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

Subaru said the Getaway offers more interior space than the EV9.

There are 450 litres (15.9 cubic feet) of cargo space behind the third-row seats and 1,291 litres (45.6 cubic feet) with the third-row seats folded.

Seating options include a seven-seat configuration with a second-row bench or a six-seat configuration with second-row captain’s chairs.

All trims have one-touch second-row folding seats for easy access to the third row, and power-folding third-row seats.

There are bottle and cup holders for every seat, a three-zone climate control system and third-row vents, customizable ambient lighting, USB-C charge ports in every row and an optional panoramic moonroof.

Tech

The Getaway gets a standard 14-inch centre touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver display.

Heated front seats are standard, while ventilated front and second-row seats and a 360-degree heated steering wheel are included on some trims.

Two 15W wireless chargers are located up front.

Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driver assistance systems is standard as well.
