While other automakers are pulling back on electric vehicle plans, Subaru is set to reveal yet another EV shortly.
The company teased a new model, saying an all-new, all-electric SUV will get its global debut at the 2026 New York International Auto Show on April 1.
The question is: will it have two rows of seats or three?
The darkened teaser image really doesn’t reveal much, nor does the company’s news release about the upcoming new model.
“Power up your next family adventure with 420 horsepower and legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive,” the March 23 news release said.

Speculation
While I’m not much for speculating, here’s my take on what this new 420-hp EV may be.
For starters, Subaru currently has three EVs in its Canadian lineup. There’s the Solterra, which was updated for the 2026 model year, as well as the Uncharted and Trailseeker, both of which are entirely new vehicle models for 2026.
All three also happen to be related to Toyota EVs.
The Solterra is a twin of the Toyota bZ, the Uncharted is a twin of the Toyota C-HR and the Trailseeker is a twin of the Toyota bZ Woodland.
Toyota also recently revealed a fourth EV model, the Highlander, which will arrive for the 2027 model year. The Highlander is a long-running nameplate in Toyota’s lineup, but for 2027 it is going entirely electric.

The 2027 Toyota Highlander is a midsize three-row EV.
Reason would indicate that the new Subaru EV will be a twin of the Highlander, but not necessarily.
For starters, the Highlander has two power output choices, a front-wheel-drive version with 221 hp or all-wheel drive with 338 hp, while the upcoming Subaru gets 420 hp.
Considering the other Subaru/Toyota EV twins share powertrain choices, it would seem unlikely Subaru would make a Toyota Highlander twin but with a different drivetrain.
The upcoming Subaru’s 420-hp output surpasses even the Trailseeker/bZ Woodland’s 375 hp.
So, it is possible Subaru is planning to launch a performance-focused EV, possibly a variant of one of the three electric SUVs already in its lineup, or maybe something entirely different.
Anyway, we’ll find out soon enough as the reveal is coming on April 1.
We can expect the new EV to launch for the 2027 model year.
