Lamborghini’s modern take on the Miura is now old enough to be a classic

The Lamborghini Miura is often referred to as the original supercar. It also turned 60 years old in 2026.

The Lamborghini Miura has many qualities that make it stand out.

It’s often referred to as one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

It wasn’t the first road car to utilize a rear-mounted mid-engine layout, but it was among the first to do so and it was a spectacular performance achievement, which is why it is also considered to be the original supercar.

The car helped Lamborghini become a brand of highly sought performance cars, competing with the other well-known and highly sought-after Italian sports car maker.

The Miura also turned 60 years old in 2026.

Lamborghini is making a big to-do out of the car’s 60th anniversary, but it’s not the first time the brand has done so.

Back in 2006 – when the Miura celebrated its 40th turn around the sun – Lamborghini created a modern reinterpretation of the car.

The automaker created the Miura Concept.

The concept car never became a road-going car. It was merely a design study and a tribute to the Miura.

The Miura Concept project was headed by Walter de’ Silva, who was the head of Lamborghini Design.

It offered a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic car with similar proportions and lines.

The concept car sat on the Gallardo platform and was modern from a technical standpoint, but offered a classic visual.

Lamborghini said the Miura Concept was conceived as a “what if” project.

Had Lamborghini turned the concept into a low-volume production car – or few-off as the company calls them – the 20-year-old car would surely be a collector classic today.

Where can you see the Miura Concept?

If you happen to be in Italy, you can see the Miura Concept in person.

The Miura Concept is on public display at the Automobili Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

The museum has a special exhibit called Born Incomparable to celebrate the Miura’s 60th anniversary.

Other unique showpieces at the exhibit include:

  • Original Miura chassis – The chassis was publicly unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1965, prior to the actual car’s reveal.
  • Miura Roadster – the Miura Roadster is another vehicle not meant for production. The one-off show car was presented in 1968 at the Brussels Motor Show, showcasing what the Miura could be without a roof.
  • Miura SVJ – The Miura SVJ is considered one of the rarest and legendary versions of the Miura ever created. It was created to explore the full performance potential of the Miura and was produced in limited numbers.
  • Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae Roadster Miura Omaggio – This car is a more contemporary tribute to the Miura. This special model was the very last Aventador roadster ever produced and was configured through Lamborghini’s Ad Personam program as a tribute to the Miura owned by the Aventador’s buyer, including the car’s Azzurro Flake body colour.
  • Disintegrating X – Miura – Artist Fabian Oefner’s artwork called Disintegrating X – Miura offers a new artistic perspective on the Miura, exploring the structure and complexity of the car.
  • Miura – Of course, the exhibit features a Miura on display, in particular the Miura P400 S, which has several performance upgrades over the original Miura P400, including a wider track, updated suspension and a more refined interior.

The exhibit runs until January 2027.

More information is available at the museum’s website.
