Kia Niro EV might not yet be dead in Canada

For 2026, the small SUV is available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric varieties, but this offering is being pared down next year.

One of Kia’s more affordable electric vehicles might not yet be dead in Canada.

Multiple North American media publications have reported that the Kia Niro EV will be discontinued following the 2026 model year, and that appears to be the case in the United States.

But it might not be so in Canada.

The Niro subcompact SUV is a unique vehicle in that it offers three different propulsion varieties.

It is available with a traditional hybrid powertrain, as well as a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric version as well.

The PHEV is being discontinued in Canada after the 2026 model year, full stop. It was discontinued in the U.S. a model year earlier.

“In regards to Niro EV, plans are still being finalized beyond MY26 for the Canadian market,” a Kia Canada spokesperson told this blog via email.

That comment doesn’t specifically say the Niro EV will live on in Canada, but it also doesn’t confirm its death.

The Kia Niro EV, with a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $45,595, is among the least expensive electric vehicles in Canada.

Additionally, Niro EV models that are sold for no more than $50,000 are eligible for Canada’s new $5,000 EV rebate.

The base model offers 407 kilometres of range on a single charge, plus numerous safety features and dual digital screens, one for the driver and one for infotainment.

The Niro PHEV is the absolute cheapest plug-in hybrid in Canada in 2026. It has a starting MSRP of $36,845.

Niro PHEV models with a total transaction price of no more than $50,000 are eligible for Canada’s new $2,500 PHEV rebate.

The PHEV version has an estimated all-electric driving range of up to 55 kilometres. It also has many of the same features as the EV variety.

“Niro PHEV will not be available in Canada after MY26, though there are still units at dealerships currently,” the spokesperson told this blog.

More information on the different versions of the Niro is available on Kia Canada’s website.
