Rivian’s midsize electric SUV has finally been unveiled.

The automaker had been teasing the R2 model and showing prototypes at auto shows for several years, but now it’s finally here.

It will be available in the United States this spring, but Canadians will have to wait until 2027 to get their hands on one.

The R2 is as five-seat SUV, slotting in below the company’s three-row R1S. Based on the pricing announced for the U.S. market, when Canadians finally do get the R2, it should give us a signficantly cheaper option than the R1S.

The R2 will be available in three powertrain choices. The most powerful version, the R2 Performance will launch first in spring 2026, followed by the R2 Premium in late 2026, and finally the least powerful model, the R2 Standard, which will launch in the first half of 2027. Those are U.S. launch dates. We’ll have to stay tuned for Canadian market details.

R2 Standard

Lastly, the base model, the R2 Standard, features a rear-wheel-drive long-range powertrain configuration with 350 hp and 355 lb.-ft. of torque. Zero to 60 mph is said to arrive in 5.9 seconds.

Canadian launch

The Canadian market launch is anticipated in 2027, though a date and pricing haven’t been announced.

The starting U.S. prices for the three models are as follows:

  • R2 Standard – $48,490
  • R2 Premium – $53,990
  • R2 Performance – $57,990

Considering the exchange rate and that Canada maintains retaliatory tariffs on vehicles made in the U.S., we can expect Canadian prices to be quite a bit north of what’s listed above in U.S. figures. But, prices should be significantly south of the R1S’s price, which starts at $143,107.
