Toyota is the largest car company, by sales volume, in the world.
So, it would reason other car companies would want to work with the Japanese automaker to capture a bit of what makes Toyota so successful.
Below are six examples of vehicles currently sold in Canada that are based on, co-developed with or use major components from Toyota.

Subaru Solterra
Subaru has four vehicles on this list.
We’ll look at all four, starting with the Solterra, which is Subaru’s first electric vehicle. It was heavily updated for 2026.
The Solterra is a twin of the Toyota bZ compact electric SUV, which itself was heavily revised in 2026 and renamed from bZ4X.
The Subaru version skips the front-wheel-drive powertrain option and goes straight for the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with 338 hp, resulting in a higher starting price.
2026 Subaru Solterra starting price: $55,327 (the price includes a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $52,495 plus fees and levies)
2026 Toyota bZ starting price: $49,648 (MSRP of $45,990)

Subaru Uncharted
Next up is the new-for-2026 Subaru Uncharted. This electric SUV is slightly smaller than the Solterra and also slightly less expensive.
The Uncharted is a twin of Toyota’s C-HR, which is also new for 2026.
The Uncharted breaks Subaru’s long-time tradition of putting all-wheel-drive as standard on its vehicles by offering a front-wheel-drive powrtrain. An all-wheel-drive unit is available. The FWD powertrain carries a lower price tag and a greater driving range than the AWD versions.
And, unlike the Solterra, which carries a higher starting price than its Toyota twin, the Uncharted is cheaper than the C-HR.
2026 Subaru Uncharted starting price: $45,827 (MSRP of $42,995)
2026 Toyota C-HR starting price: $48,300 (MSRP of $44,900)

Subaru Trailseeker
Yet another EV, which also launched for 2026, makes this list.
This one, the Subaru Trailseeker is a twin of the Toyota bZ Woodland. This model is based on the Solterra/bZ but is slightly longer (up 150 mm) and taller (up 25 mm).
The Trailseekr, as well as its bZ Woodland twin, get a more powerful dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain as standard, producing 375 hp. The Trailseeker has an estimated 420-kilometre driving range.
2026 Subaru Trailseeker starting price: $57,827 (MSRP of $54,995)
2026 Toyota bZ Woodland starting price: $63,300 (MSRP of $59,900)

Subaru BRZ
The final Subaru on this list is not an EV, it’s the gasoline-powered Subaru BRZ sports coupe, which was co-developed with the Toyota GR86.
While Subaru’s EVs benefit from Toyota’s EV-making capabilities, in this case we can say Toyota benefits from Subaru’s capabilities as both cars are powered by a boxer engine (a specialty of Subaru).
This BRZ/GR86 pairing goes back more than a decade as the first-generation cars launched in 2013 as the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. When the Scion brand was dropped, the FR-S was renamed the Toyota 86 in 2017, and then the GR86 with the launch of the second-gen car.
Both cars have nearly identical design and nearly identical prices in Canada.
2026 Subaru BRZ starting price: $36,027 (MSRP of $33,395)
2026 Toyota GR86 starting price: $35,746 (MSRP of $32,695)

BMW Z4
Here’s another pairing of vehicles in which Toyota benefits from another automaker’s powertrain.
While Toyota and BMW worked together to develop the BMW Z4 roadster and the Toyota GR Supra coupe, both cars utilize BMW’s powertrains.
For 2026, the Supra utilizes a 3-litre twin-scroll turbocharged inline-six engine producing 382 hp and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, while the Bimmer has an additional entry-level engine available as well, a four-cylinder unit with 255 hp.
Both the Z4 and Supra are in their final year of production.
2026 BMW Z4 starting price: $74,592 (MSRP of $70,900)
2026 Toyota GR Supra starting price: $66,421 (MSRP of $63,375)

Mazda CX-50 Hybrid
The last vehicle on this list doesn’t have a Toyota twin as the CX-50 is simply just a Mazda vehicle. But it makes this list because the CX-50 Hybrid, which launched in 2025, makes use of Toyota’s hybrid powertrain. The powertrain utilizes a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, battery and three electric motors for a total of 219 hp and 163 lb.-ft. of torque. The hybrid also has a towing capacity of 680 kilograms (1,500 pounds).
It’s not that Mazda can’t build a hybrid of its own. The company’s larger CX-70 and CX-90 models come with mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but sometimes, depending on an automaker’s needs and projected sales volumes, it makes more financial sense to borrow a powertrain from another automaker than to make one for a particular vehicle. Mazda is also developing a hybrid of its own for the similarly sized CX-5, which is expected to arrive for 2027.
Getting your hands on a CX-50 may not be easy in Canada. The compact SUV is made in the United States and subject to Canada’s counter-tariffs on U.S.-assembled vehicles, so the automaker had stopped imports of this model in early 2025. Even so, Mazda Canada managed to sell a few brand-new 2025 models in recent months. The company sold 54 CX-50s in January and 88 in December.
The automaker’s website, as of today, says the model has limited inventory, so availability may depend on location.
More information is available on the Mazda Canada website.
