GM is now Canada’s EV sales leader

General Motors sold more than 25,000 electric vehicles in Canada through 2025, capturing 21.2 per cent of the national EV market.

General Motors sold more electric vehicles in Canada than any other automaker in 2025.

That’s despite the fact the company sold fewer EVs than it did a year earlier, and GM had not been the EV sales leader in 2024.

The company sold more than 25,000 EVs in Canada through 2025, which was good enough to capture 21.2 per cent of the nation’s EV market.

In 2024, the company sold 31,967 electric vehicles.

So, how did GM become the EV sales king?

The answer is simple. EV sales tanked across the board in Canada, particularly for Tesla, the former EV sales king in Canada, as that company saw its Canadian sales cut by more than half from 2024 to 2025.

So, while GM sold fewer EVs in 2025 than it did in 2024, it managed to capture a larger share of a smaller pie.

General Motors has 13 electric vehicles it markets in Canada across three of its brands, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV by itself captured 13.3 per cent of the nation’s EV market in 2025. It was the second-most sold electric vehicle in Canada, coming in behind Tesla’s Model Y.

“Canadians want choice and GM Canada is delivering,” said Shane Peever, vice president of sales, service and marketing at GM Canada, in a news release. “We’re Canada’s EV market leader, and in 2025 we also led the overall industry for the third year in a row, capturing 15.5 per cent market share with nearly 300,000 vehicles sold. From electric vehicles to our strong gas-powered lineup, we’re meeting customers where they are.”
