The all-new Volvo EX60 has been revealed.

The SUV sits in the same class category as the company’s popular XC60, but this one is all electric.

In Canada, the EX60 will be available with two powertrain choices, both of which feature all-wheel drive, while other markets will also have access to a rear-wheel-drive version.

The powertrain options are P10 AWD and P12 AWD with front and rear electric motors.

The estimated driving ranges are preliminary and are based on EPA testing standards with vehicles riding on 20-inch wheels with summer tires. Vehicles sold in Canada will wear different tires.

The company said the EX60 can add up to 270 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes of charging when using a 400-kW fast charger.

The EX60 sits on Volvo’s SPA3 electric vehicle architecture, which the company said sets the standard for scalability, modularity and manufacturing costs.

The vehicle’s cell-to-body technology, next-gen e-motors, new battery cell design and mega casting help boost energy efficiency and driving range, as well as to reduce weight.

Thanks to the vehicle’s low front, sloping roofline and tapered body sides, the EX60 has a drag coefficient of 0.26, Volvo said.

Interior tech and comfort

Volvo said the SUV’s flat floor give rear-seat occupants ample legroom.

Audiophiles will have a choice of a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which includes headrest speakers in the four main seats. Apple Music is pre-installed and the system comes with Dolby Atmos.

The SUV is powered by Vovlo Cars’ HuginCore system, which allows the car to “think, process and act,” the company said.

Volvo developed the system in collaboration with companies such as Google, Nvidia and Qualcomm Technologies.

The EX60 is also the first Volvo car with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant. The company said the AI assistant is integrated in the vehicle and occupants can have natural and personalized conversations with it.

Safety

Volvo also said the EX60 is one of the safest cars available as the HuginCore system constantly assesses the car’s surroundings.

It also has Volvo’s latest multi-adaptive seatbelts in the front seats, which adjust how they protect occupants based on the person’s body type.

The EX60 also has a safety cage.

“The new, all-electric EX60 changes the game in terms of range, charging and price and represents a new beginning for Volvo Cars and our customers,” Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson said in a news release.“With this car, we remove all remaining obstacles for going electric. This fantastic new car is also a testament of what we are capable of at Volvo Cars, with an all-new product architecture introducing new key technologies – mega casting, cell-to-body and core computing.”
