Volvo is set to unveil its upcoming EX60 all-electric midsize SUV.

The vehicle will likely be an important model in the automaker’s lineup as it will sit in the same vehicle class as the XC60, the company’s all-time bestseller, except in electric form.

“The EX60 is designed to be a game-changer,” said Anders Bell, chief technology officer at Volvo Cars, in a news release. “With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car. The result is class-leading range and fast-charging speeds, marking the end of range anxiety.”

The EX60 will get its full reveal on Jan. 21.

Ahead of that date, the automaker teased out some details.

The company said the vehicle will offer up to 640 kilometres of range in all-wheel-drive models, based on EPA testing standards, and thus will end range anxiety.

With an electrical system on an 800-volt architecture, the company promises fast charging as well.

Under ideal 400-kW fast-charging conditions, the automaker said the EX60 will be able to recharge up to 270 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes. Keep in mind that at this time in Canada, publicly accessible Level 3 fast-charging stations typically top out at around 320 kW, even so it should still charge quite fast.

The EX60 rides on Volvo’s SPA3 platform, which the automaker called its most advanced electric car architecture to date, which is key to the vehicle’s class-leading range.

More details will be announced when the Volvo EX60 gets its full reveal.
