This Chinese EV goes sideways faster than you’ll ever drive in a straight line

The GAC Hyptec SSR reached a drift speed of 213.523 km/h for a new Guinness World Record for the highest drift speed achieved by an EV.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are out to prove they can build EVs better than pretty much everyone else.

The latest proof is a sideways speed record.

The GAC Group announced its team was able to drive the Hyptec SSR at a drift speed of 213.523 km/h.

That set a Guinness World Record for the highest drift speed achieved by a pure electric vehicle.

Hyptec is a premium brand of GAC Aion.

While that’s far from the overall record – 304.96 km/h achieved in a Nissan GT-R Nismo – it shows how far ahead the Chinese are ahead of the world in building electric cars.

A speed of 213.523 km/h is about double the highway speed limit in Canada and faster than most of us – including the reckless among us – will ever take our cars in a straight line.

“As China’s first mass-produced supercar, the Hypetec SSR not only demonstrates the technological innovation and engineering prowess of GAC Group, but also highlights the rising strength of China’s automotive industry on the global stage,” the automaker said in a news release.

“Through its cutting-edge performance and original electric supercar technology, the Hypetec SSR vividly presents both the technological allure of Chinese supercars and the dynamic, modern spirit of canton to audiences worldwide.”

This news comes not long after the Yangwang U9 Xtreme was driven to a single-direction world speed record of 496.2 km/h.
