Yamaha shows off prototype of side-by-side three-wheeler

Autocycle rules vary province to province, with some provinces allowing them to be driven with a regular driver’s licence, others requiring a motorcycle licence and some prohibiting them altogether.

The Yamaha motorcycle brand looks to be getting into the autocycle segment and is showcasing a prototype of such a vehicle.

And this one is electric.

The company showcased its Tricera proto at the Japan Mobility Show.

The Tricera proto is a three-wheel side-by-side open-top vehicle, which the company said is a “working prototype proposing a new kind of driving pleasure with its three-wheeled steering system.”

Rules around three-wheel side-by-side motorcycles, also known as autocycles, vary from province to province in Canada. Some provinces allow you to drive them with a full-fledged driver’s licence, albeit with some specific rules such as requiring a proper helmet, while some provinces require a motorcycle licence and some even prohibit them altogether.

Yamaha said the Tricera’s three-wheel steering system delivers stimulating cornering performance and a new steering sensation.

The company said the vehicle is focused on quick cornering response and a mid-corner driver connection that’s typical in all-wheel steering vehicles.

The company also focused heavily on the vehicle’s sound – think of the company’s connection to music and sound products.

The Yamaha Motor team partnered with sound specialists Sumito Tanaka and Hikaru Hashimoto to create an interior space intended to excite the driver. The vehicle features Yamaha Motor’s alive AD sound control to project the sound.

Tanaka handled the driving sounds while Hashimoto handled the vehicle’s startup sound as well as other user interface sounds.

Yamaha Motor has not indicated when we can expect a production version of an autocycle.

More information on the prototype is available on the Yamaha Motor website.
