It turns out that when the people at Porsche need to photograph a Porsche in motion, they drive alongside the subject car in another Porsche, and not one of the company’s hulking SUVs, but in a mid-engine sports car.

More for our entertainment than anything else, the automaker revealed its camera car, which the company has been using in Leipzig since 2017.

The car, a Porsche 718 Boxster S, was converted into a camera car by a team of nine apprentices from Porsche Leipzig GmbH.

The car was created so the company could film vehicles on the track at Porsche Experience Center Leipzig.

The apprentices, as part of their second-year training, created a concept based on the intended daily use of the car.

The Boxster’s soft-top roof was removed and a roll bar was installed.

The car also had steel tube mounts added on the front, rear and sides for a variety of camera positions. The roll bar, while it’s a safety feature, can also be used as an elevated camera mounting point.

The car was finished in matte black to minimize reflections during filming.

The car’s two luggage compartments (front and back) were padded and fitted with a harness each. The standing platform between the seats and the rear trunk also has a safety harness.

Porsche’s camera car also got some tech upgrades, including new internal wiring that allows photographers to connect the camera to a laptop, which can be secured in the passenger area. There’s also an inverter that can power and recharge all devices.

Porsche said this car has been used regularly for shoots at the Leipzig track. External productions have also used the car for their own shoots.
