Toyota is making older bZ4X EVs better

Toyota Canada is making sure drivers of yesteryear’s electric vehicles aren’t stuck in the past.

The company announced a series of enhancements for its latest battery-electric vehicle (BEV), the 2026 bZ, and some of those features will be available to drivers of the 2023 to 2025 bZ4X.

The bZ4X is essentially an earlier generation of the electric SUV now simply called the bZ.

NACS charging

Toyota EVs now have access to the Tesla Supercharger network.

The latest bZ has a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port and can plug in directly into the Tesla Superchargers and other NACS-style charging stations.

The previous bZ4X has a Combined Charging System (CCS) charge port, but it will now be able to access Tesla Superchargers and other NACS charging stations via an adapter, and Toyota Canada will be giving away those adapters free of charge.

The company said starting in November, owners of 2023 to 2025 bZ4X vehicles will receive a letter directing them to contact their dealer to receive one complimentary NACS to CCS charging adapter.

Toyota added this is the only adapter that includes the assurance of Toyota warranty coverage. In other words, if you use a different, third-party adapter and something goes wrong, you may not be covered by the vehicle’s warranty.

Drivers of the newer bZ, which has a native NACS port, will soon also be able to order a Toyota-approved CCS to NACS adapter, which will allow them to connect to CCS-style charging stations.

New Apple Maps EV Routing

Another enhancement coming to both the new bZ and the older bZ4Xs is the addition of Apple Maps EV Routing via Apple CarPlay on all 2023 or newer Toyota BEVs with Toyota Multimedia.

This service provides real-time vehicle information to iPhone users so they can easily navigate to compatible chargers on their way to their destinations. The system takes into account factors such as battery performance and elevation changes.

Enhancements just for the 2026 bZ

The older bZ4X is not getting every new feature.

Toyota Canada said the company’s 2026 BEVs will gain Plug & Charge capability at select charging stations, including the Tesla Supercharger Network, via the company’s Remote Connect. The driver must have an active Remote Connect trial or subscription.

Plug & Charge is a technology for simplified billing when charging a vehicle.

The new system will allow drivers to use the Wallet feature within the Toyota App to pay for charging at select charging stations, without having to use other, third-party apps. A one-time payment setup through the app’s Wallet is required.

“The BEV ecosystem is different than that of internal combustion engines and hybrids, but the goal remains the same: to provide a high-quality Toyota experience our customers can count on for the long haul,” said Tony Kelly, vice president, customer services, Toyota Canada Inc., in a news release. “We’re delighted to be able to provide our battery electric vehicle customers meaningful enhancements throughout their vehicle ownership experience.”
