There will be an added reason to cheer for low-scoring hockey through the coming NHL regular season.
Hyundai Canada announced a new initiative to support childhood cancer research, and the more shots goalies save, the more money the automaker will donate.
The program, called Hyundai Hope on Wheels Greatest Save, is an extension of the automaker’s Hyundai Hope on Wheels, a charitable organization that launched in early 2025 with the aim of supporting Canadian pediatric cancer centres.
Hyundai also happens to be the official automotive partner of the NHL, the NHLPA and Hockey Fights Cancer. Hockey Fights Cancer is an initiative of the NHL and NHLPA to raise funds for cancer support programs.
Through the Greatest Save initiative, Hyundai Canada will donate $10 for every goalie save through the 2025-26 NHL regular season to Hyundai Hope on Wheels.
Last season, there were approximately 70,000 saves. At that rate, that would result in a donation of $700,000.
This money, via Hyundai Hope on Wheels, will go to Hockey Fights Cancer for pediatric cancer research.
“Goalies have always been the last line of defence, the ones that step up when it matters most,” said Marty Walsh, NHLPA executive director, in a news release. “We’re proud to partner with Hyundai Canada and the NHL with the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Greatest Save, a program that honours that spirit by turning every save into something even bigger – supporting pediatric cancer research and care. It’s a meaningful way to bring the game we love together with the values we stand for.”
The Greatest Save initiative is on top of Hyundai Hope on Wheels’ ongoing commitment to Canada’s children’s cancer centres.
The organization has committed to donating $4 million through its first year to Canadian hospitals serving children with cancer.
