Goodbye numbers, hello real names.

Volkswagen announced it will start giving its electric vehicles familiar names instead of numbers which the company currently uses.

The ID. designation at the beginning of the names of VW EVs will be maintained.

The new naming convention will begin with the upcoming ID. Polo, which is a production vehicle based on the ID. 2all concept car. The ID. Polo electric car is launching for the 2026 model year.

“Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds. They stand for a strong brand and embody characteristics such as quality, timeless design and technologies for all. That’s why we’re moving our well-known names into the future. The ID. Polo is just the beginning,” said Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer in a news release.

It is unclear if the ID. Polo will make it to Canada.

Volkswagen currently sells two EVs in Canada, the ID.4 compact SUV and ID. Buzz minivan, and the company is hesitant to introduce cars to North America where buyers prefer SUVs. The company’s ID.7 large sedan, for example, had at one time been destined for Canada and the United States, but that is no longer happening.

Future EVs

Volkswagen said it will transfer established names to its portfolio of electric vehicles with each new model generation.

At the same time, vehicles with internal combustion engines will continue with their names as before, so you might see EVs and ICE vehicles with similar names, just that the EVs will have ID. at the start of the names.

Another upcoming model will be the ID. Polo GTI, also set to launch in 2026, which is based on the ID. GTI Concept.

Both the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI will shed their camouflage when they are fully unveiled at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, which is running Sept. 8 to 14.
