If iPhones, Samsung Galaxies and Google Pixels can charge without wires, then why not cars?
Evidently someone at Porsche asked themselves this same question, because wireless charging is coming to the company’s future electric vehicles.
The first Porsche model that will have wireless charging capability will be the upcoming Cayenne Electric.
Porsche announced it will be bringing an 11-kW wireless charging system to market. At 11 kW, that’s roughly equal or slightly faster than your typical Level 2 EV home charger.
Porsche’s unit features a one-box plate, which includes a floor plate that gets mounted at the parking spot, and there’s no need to install a wall box or control unit.
“Ease of use, suitability for everyday use and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” said Michael Steiner, deputy chairman and member of the executive board, research and development, Porsche, in a news release. “We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient.”
The upcoming Cayenne Electric, which will be the first Porsche vehicle that will be available to order with the wireless charger, will have its world premiere at the end of 2025.
In 2026, the company plans to start selling the floor plate units at Porsche Centres and online at the Porsche Shop.
