Polestar has set the Guinness World Record for the longest journey taken by an electric SUV on a single charge.
The company’s Polestar 3 long-range single-motor model was able to travel 935.44 kilometres on a single charge, the company announced Aug. 13.
The record was achieved on U.K. public roads and took 22 hours and 57 minutes to complete.
“We are very proud to say we have a world record holder in the Polestar family. This official Guinness World Record for range is another proof point that Polestar 3 is setting new standards. We will continue to push the boundaries of technology and electric performance,” Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller said in a news release.
Professional efficiency drivers Sam Clarke, Kevin Booker and Richard Parker took turns at the wheel, switching every three hours to maintain their alertness.
Weather conditions on the day of the record run were mixed, including rain.
The Polestar 3 ran at an efficiency of 12.1 kWh/100 km.
The company said that once the SUV was showing it had a battery capacity of zero per cent, it still managed to travel 12.8 kilometres. The drivers actually managed to get to a charger before the vehicle died on them.
“While the drivers pushed the Polestar 3 to the boundaries of its range capability, it goes to show how battery range has improved exponentially over the past few years,” Polestar UK managing director Matt Galvin said in the release. “For a large premium SUV to go way beyond a London to Edinburgh distance is truly impressive and with this the adage that ‘EVs can’t go far’ has been very much consigned to the history books.”
