Mitsubishi Outlander going hybrid in 2026, PHEV version getting significant update

The ICE version of the three-row SUV received a significant mid-cycle refresh in 2025 and the plug-in hybrid model is catching up in 2026.

Mitsubishi is making significant changes to its Outlander and Outlander PHEV three-row SUVs for the 2026 model year.

Firstly, the internal combustion engine version received a mid-cycle refresh in 2025, and now the plug-in hybrid version will gain those updates for the 2026 model year. Additionally, the Outlander PHEV will have a larger battery so it will have a longer all-electric driving range.

The ICE version will actually lose its gasoline-only powertrain and will go hybrid, starting in 2026.

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada announced these updates in a look ahead at model year 2026. Below is a more detailed look at each vehicle update.

Outlander

The ICE version of the Outlander is currently powered by a 2.5-litre engine four-cylinder engine. It will be replaced by a hybrid powertrain featuring a Mitsubishi-designed and developed turbocharged 1.5-litre engine.

The current 2.5-litre unit has 181 hp and 181 lb.-ft. of torque. Mitsubishi didn’t provide power figures, but says the new powertrain will provide more torque with electric torque improving off-the-line acceleration, plus it will be more efficient.

Besides the new powertrain, the Outlander will also bring back the previous Noir trim, which has a distinct look.

The 2026 Outlander is expected to go on sale in Canada in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Outlander PHEV

The mid-cycle refresh for the Outlander PHEV should surprise no one. The ICE model received a significant update in 2025 and now the PHEV model is gaining those new features in 2026.

This includes a redesigned interior with more sound-deadening (quieter cabin), plus new interior materials and colours, heated and ventilated front seats, a new centre console with more storage under the armrest, new cup holders, redesigned phone storage, a Yamaha audio system and a 12.3-inch infotainment display.

The exterior will see a revised grille with redesigned front and rear bumpers, new 18- and 20-inch wheels and a darker tint on the taillights.

The powertrain is also getting a tweak as the Outlander PHEV will now have a larger-capacity battery with increased all-electric range. Mitsubishi didn’t provide the new electric range, but the current model has an estimated range of 61 kilometres, so look for a bump in this figure.

Mitsubishi said the updated SUV will get improved steering and ride quality thanks to tuning of the suspension and tire specifications, giving it a more assured driving feel.

The Outlander PHEV will also get the Noir trim.

This updated plug-in hybrid SUV is expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2026.

Eclipse Cross and RVR

Mitsubishi’s smaller SUVs are also getting some tweaks, particularly the Eclipse Cross, which will see some trim-level updates.

This includes the GT trim gaining remote engine start instead of embedded navigation. The Noir trim will be reduced in price by $1,500 because it is losing its sunroof and its audio system is being revised, likely to a lesser one.

The 2026 Eclipse Cross will go on sale sometime this summer.

Mitsubishi didn’t provide specifics but said the RVR will have some content and feature changes. The 2026 RVR will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2025.
