Mazda has revealed the third-generation CX-5 compact crossover, which is debuting for the 2026 model year.
The new model grows slightly compared to the outgoing CX-5, but the biggest change is that its new looks resemble the larger CX-70 and CX-90.
The compact SUV segment is an important one for automakers and Mazda has two vehicles that play in this field, the other being the CX-50.

Since the original CX-5 debuted in 2012, Mazda has sold more than 300,000 of them in Canada and 4.5 million globally.
“Now, the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 builds upon its proven foundation with a more spacious cabin that features innovative, intuitive technology, while also enhancing vehicle safety to craft an SUV that is more capable, engaging, and desirable than ever before,” Mazda Canada said in a news release.

Design
Mazda says the updated CX-5 utilizes an evolved Kodo design, and was developed around a “wearable gear” concept. This concept is said to be inspired by functional yet stylish clothing.
The new CX-5 is larger as well. It gains 4.5 inches of overall length and wheelbase and is more than half an inch wider.
The SUV’s proportions are now bolder, which helps to give it an even more spacious interior.
The front end has a wider-set look, with Mazda’s wing grille now sandwiched between more angular lights.
The rear lights are also more angular, similar to the larger CX-70 and CX-90, and the Mazda badge has been replaced by large “MAZDA” lettering.

Interior
Mazda gave the 2026 CX-5 what it calls an uncluttered cabin, although this might come at the expense of some physical buttons.
The door openings are now larger and rear-seat passengers get more leg, knee and headroom.
The SUV also has an available panoramic sunroof.

Thanks to the SUV’s growth spurt, there’s now a larger rear cargo area – nearly two inches longer and more than an inch taller – plus the lift-in height is now lower, making it easier to load the trunk.
The front doors get new ambient lighting trim, with seven selectable lighting colours.

Technology
The new CX-5 gets an available 15.6-inch centre touchscreen, which is the largest offered in any Mazda vehicle.
The system includes Google built-in, which will have the ability, when available, to operate the Gemini AI assistant, which is intended to improve voice commands.

Powertrain
The 2026 CX-5 comes with a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine with 187 hp and 185 lb.-ft. of torque, which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission sending power to the i-Active all-wheel-drive system, which is standard.
Mazda plans to add a hybrid powertrain in 2027.
The third-generation Mazda CX-5 is expected to become available in spring 2026. Canadian pricing hasn’t been announced.
