Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife race track is where automakers go to score bragging rights.
Nürburgring has had various race track iterations over the years and currently has two available. One is the modern Grand Prix track, which measures 5.148 kilometres long, and then there’s the famous Nordschleife race track, which dates back to the 1920s.
What’s so special about the Nordschleife?
Referred to as “the Green Hell,” the 20.832-kilometre race track is considered the gold standard for testing vehicle performance due to its demanding layout.
It features 73 corners, more than 300 metres of elevation changes, a narrow track width and it has an unforgiving nature of punishing drivers who make errors.
If you manage a fast run, you’ll tell the world about it and automotive publications will spread the message to the wider masses, which adds to the desirability of your fast car. Fail, and hopefully nobody notices.
It’s where many automakers bring their pre-production sports cars for test runs and make vehicle adjustments based on results at this track.
It’s also where automakers bring their production cars with the hopes of scoring headline-worthy lap times.
Below is a look at the fastest production car lap times at Nürburgring’s Nordschleife by vehicle type.
