Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a four-door concept car that should make electric vehicle cynics become believers.
While the Concept AMG GT XX model is only a concept, the automaker said it offers insight into an upcoming four-door series-production sports car from Mercedes-AMG.
The concept car is build on the high-performance AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA), which will underpin multiple electric AMG models.
The GT XX is motivated by three axial flux motors delivering a total of 1,000 kW, or 1,341 hp (1,360 European horses).
What’s more, the automaker says about five minutes of charging time is enough to give this concept ride enough recharge for about 400 kilometres of range, by European testing standards.

Drivetrain
The automaker collaborated the British electric motor specialists at YASA, a company that is a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz.
The electric motors are said to deliver high power from an extremely compact package and will enter production in 2026.
With the concept car’s powertrain configuration, the AMG GT XX is said to be able to reach top speeds of more than 360 km/h (223 mph).

New battery cell design
To ensure those electric motors can deliver all that power, the car needs a battery capable of powering them.
Mercedes-Benz said the concept car has a completely new battery cell design. They use cylindrical cells that are tall and slim, which helps improve cell cooling.
The automaker said thanks to their narrow diameter, the distance from the cell core to the casing is small, which enables rapid dissipation of heat, which is generated under load. This method allows for each cell to be kept within its optimum temperature.
The cell housing is made of laser-welded aluminum, which is lighter than standard steel containers, which improves electric and heat conductivity.
The cells include several other innovations, which improves their performance and gives them a long lifespan, Mercedes-Benz said.

“The best minds in our global R&D network have contributed their extensive expertise – from Mercedes-Benz in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach and YASA in the U.K. to our Formula 1 drivetrain experts at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth. Together, they have developed the Concept AMG GT XX and are providing an insight into pioneering drivetrain technology and the future of performance. The technology program pushes the boundaries even further and ventures into new ground. The Concept AMG GT XX with its three axial flux motors now lifts performance and endurance to a completely new level,” said Markus Schäfer, member of the board of management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, chief technology officer, development and procurement, in a news release.
