There’s a new EV king of Nürburgring, but you can’t have one

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra set the fastest lap record by an electric vehicle at Nürburgring Nordschleife. It’s now also the fastest four-door at the track.

Chinese cellphone maker Xiaomi has proven it can build one heck of a car.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra electric vehicle has set the production electric vehicle lap record at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife race track, with a time of 7:04.957 minutes.

The company announced the achievement on June 11, while the record run occurred on April 20.

What’s more, the car is now also the fastest four-door car at the track, electric or otherwise.

The previous EV lap record at Nürburgring, often referred to as the Green Hell, was held by the Rimac Nevera hypercar, which had a time of 7:05.298 minutes.

The previous four-door vehicle record at the track was also held by an electric vehicle, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, with a lap time of 7:07:55.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is a high-performance version of the company’s SU7.

The SU7 Ultra has 1,527 hp (1,548 PS) and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 1.98 seconds, the company said, and has a top speed of more than 350 km/h.

Unfortunately for Canadians, we can’t have one.

Xiaomi is currently focused on sales growth in its home market of China with eventual plans for global expansion.

Keep in mind, should Xiaomi choose to expand globally, Canada’s tariff rate of 106.1 per cent on Chinese-made EVs would likely keep it from our market.
